Currently at Reed Projects Gallery, a show entitled Smoking Guns and Feathers from Steven Spazuk is on display, highlighting his unique technique of “fumage.” The Canada-based artist was also on hand on opening night to show delighted fans his skills in person with the flame of a candle, creating imagery with marks of smoke and soot. Referenced in the title is his theme of environmental awareness and the effect of humans on our Earth’s ecosystem as well as a nod towards his way of mark-making. Discuss Spazuk here.

On the 26th of January, Galerie C.O.A in Montral will be opening Récidive, a solo show by the “fire painter” Spazuk. The distinctive technique he uses is called fumage, which allows him to use the flame of a candle or torch as a “paintbrush” to create his paintings with trails of soot.
