On the 26th of January, Galerie C.O.A in Montral will be opening Récidive, a solo show by the “fire painter” Spazuk. The distinctive technique he uses is called fumage, which allows him to use the flame of a candle or torch as a “paintbrush” to create his paintings with trails of soot. He later manipulates these trails by using various needles, razors, and makeshift bird feather pens, which result in incredibly detailed black and white works on canvas, panel or paper.

The softness and fragility of his medium gives his works a dreamy feel that can be hardly achieved with any other technique. For this exhibition, he created a series of different sized tondos featuring bird and nature focused imagery, regular canvases mixing portraiture and more natural elements, and a large series of small figurative pieces.
