Preview: Takashi Murakami @ Gagosian (London)

Opening Monday, June 27th at the Gagosian in London will be a new body of work from Takashi Murakami. It’s been a while since the founder of the Superflat movement has shown in the UK, and it looks like he will be revisiting his overtly sexual sculptural works ala Miss Ko and My Lonesome Cowboy with this new piece seen above entitled 3-Meter Girl. Along with a metal penis of towering proportions, Mr Big Mushroom, and Miss Clam, a metal vagina, the show certainly promises […]

Google Icon x Takashi Murakami

Since you are reading this article, you are probably familiar with the internet and thus familiar with the occasionally changing Google icon (see Jackson Pollock & Norman Rockwell). Well, the next artist that has been commissioned is Takashi Murakami to celebrate the summer solstice which lands on today, June 21st. Entitled The First Day of Summer, the superflat movement founder has decided to enlist the help of his Kaikai and Kiki characters as well as his multicolored flowers. These images were produced over a three month […]

Releases: New Murakami Prints

Remember when we posted some interesting gems gleaned from Takasahi Murakami’s twitter. We now know where some of these prints Murakami-san was furiously signing in this photo are headed – to Hidaro Zingaro. For those who haven’t heard, this is the new gallery for the Super-Flat founder’s Kaikai Kiki division that opened in April, located on the third floor of Nakano Broadway (site of the previous Inochi display). The prints were released today, June 9th Tokyo time so head over to their website to see if you […]

Openings: Tat Ito – “Memento Mori” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

We were impressed with the preview images we saw from Tat Ito’s debut New York solo show, Momento Mori, at the Joshua Liner Gallery, but were still blown away after seeing the paintings in person at the opening. Ito’s new paintings retain much of what we loved in his previous work, such as the humorous and unique costumed characters and delicate silver-leafed backgrounds. However, with this collection, Ito has taken his art stylistically and thematically further than anything he has done previously . Two pieces […]

Art HK ’11: Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin

As you knew from our teaser article, we were looking forward to the Emmanuel Perrotin booth at Art Hong Kong because of what KAWS had to offer.  But, turns out the gallery was showing many other artists from their roster including AM favorites like Takashi Murakami, Mr., Chiho Aoshima, and Aya Takano among many others. More photos courtesy of Jasper Wong (POW WOW) after the jump…

Art HK ’11 – Overview

Taking another step forward since our coverage of the fair last year, Hong Kong International Art Fair has expanded to include 260 blue-chip galleries as well joined the fold of Art Basel. Fueled by the voracious appetite and the newfound wealth of collectors in China and other parts of Asia, the region has become more and more important to the longtime strategy of art dealers and galleries – making Art HK the perfect stage. We’ll take a more focused look for you soon, but for […]

Teaser: Takashi Murakami @ Gagosian (London)

It’s been over two years since we attended the opening for a Takashi Murakami show at the Gagosian in London. At the end of June, fans in the UK will again have a chance to enjoy the Superflat master’s work in person, this time at the Britannia Street space. After a showing with the blue-chip gallery at Art Hong Kong this week, Mr. Kaikai Kiki will certainly start focusing on his next new body of work.  No word yet on what will be on display […]

Previews: Tat Ito – “Memento Mori” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

New York-based Japanese artist Tat Ito makes his NYC solo debut with a show at the Joshua Liner Gallery entitled Memento Mori, the opening reception for which takes place 6-9pm this Thursday. The Latin phrase (literally “remember you will die”) often is used in reference to artwork representing death or the impermanent nature of life. However, from the look of the preview images we’ve seen, Ito seems to be using the term—along with certain visual allusions (like the lobster above) found within his new series […]

Openings: Damien Hirst – “Forgotten Promises” @ Gagosian Gallery (Hong Kong) w/Takashi Murakami

As teased, the grand opening of the Hong Kong location of Gagosian Gallery is officially tomorrow, January 18, with superstar artist Damien Hirst’s latest exhibition Forgotten Promises. Fortunately for you, you do not have to wait until tomorrow to get a sneak peak. Fellow Gagosian artist Takashi Murakami gives us an early look at the show and a closer look at some new paintings featuring his signature skulls, which are also on view at the gallery. Speaking of human “domes” we also get to see […]

Merry Christmas from Takashi Murakami

Looks like Mr. Kaikai Kiki would like to wish everyone Happy Holidays with this picture posed next to “Santa DOB”. Wouldn’t Murakami look kinda like a Japanese Santa Claus if his hairs were whiter?  Then we would all get the gifts we always wanted… Discuss Takashi Murakami here.
