Releases: Tomoo Gokita x Case Studyo – “A Bathing Beauty” Sculpture

Taking a painting from his show at Mary Boone Gallery last year (covered), Tomoo Gokita has brought the faceless beauty he created to life with the help of Case Studyo. Entitled A Bathing Beauty like the painting, the new bronze sculpture will be released tomorrow through their website in two colorways – white & black. The very limited edition (8 + 3 AP’s) will come in a silkscreened wooden box and include a signed and numbered certificate from the Japanese artist. Discuss Tomoo Gokita here.

Upcoming: Tomoo Gokita – “Bésame Mucho” @ Honor Fraser

This Saturday night (April 11th) at Honor Fraser in Los Angeles, Tomoo Gokita will be unveiling a new solo show entitled Bésame Mucho. The exhibition appears to build on the monochromatic series seen in New York (covered) earlier this year composed of black and white gouache canvases featuring his distinct form of obscured portraiture. Not only will there be individual focused paintings, but also large scale group compositions (like the one seen above) from the Tokyo-based artist. Discuss Tomoo Gokita here.

Openings: “OK, I’ll Rename It” @ Bill Brady KC

Summer has been heating up and of all the group shows popping up as everyone enters the break before fall – Bill Brady in Kansas City has some of the most hotness with a four person showcase. Entitled OK, I’ll Rename It, this exhibition puts together four artistic peers that have shown together in various combinations of galleries & group shows, but this marks the first time Erik Parker, KAWS, Todd “REAS” James and Tomoo Gokita have shared the stage for a smashing demonstration of their creativity. Check […]

Openings: Tomoo Gokita @ Mary Boone Gallery (Chelsea)

Last month, AM paid a visit to the Mary Boone Gallery in Chelsea to enjoy new works from Tomoo Gokita. Working exclusively in shades of black and white for this exhibition, the Japanese painter has created a series of textured portraits that pay homage to the “dated archetypes lifted of pulp fiction, Hollywood rags, and film noir” with names like Showgirl, Geisha Girl, A Bathing Beauty, Cocktail Pianist from Acapulco, Daughter of a Fraudster, and A Female Spy. Take a look at our photos below and stop by […]

Openings: Tomoo Gokita – “Wildest Dreams” @ ATM Gallery

We recently swung by ATM gallery to check out Tomoo Gokita’s latest show “Wildest Dreams”. The body of work was quite a departure from his usual style that we witnessed at his previous showing (here) at Honor Frasier Gallery as these new canvases measured more than 4-5 feet each way and it was more “literal” in style. It seems that these works took less of an abstract view and had a more concise focus. Bill from ATM gallery took the time to take us to the back […]
