Opening on Friday, Nov 15, is a solo show by Patrick Martinez at Public Functionary in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Buy Now, Cry Later includes eighteen all-new works by the artist, including his signature neon signs and mixed-media paintings. The pieces feature pop-culture, music, and societal subjects that explore the contemporary crises of today. Over the weekend, fans in Los Angeles were once again able to enjoy a new body of work from Travis Louie (interviewed) at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery. It’s been couple years since his last showing at the space (see 2011), but the paintings and drawings for Strange Discoveries were well worth the wait. Dedicated to his father who recently passed away, the exhibition featured Louie’s signature dignified portraiture of surreal creatures rendered amazingly to look like vintage photos. Continuing their mission of supporting socio-political art in urban spaces, Positive-Propaganda has arranged for another public work in Munich. The eye-catching piece from Mark Jenkins (interviewed) features one of his signature tape sculpture mannequins playing a giant game of tic-tac-toe on the facade of the Social Welfare Office in the German city’s Westend. Quam Odunsi’s second solo exhibition at Design Matters Gallery in Los Angeles, The Reagents (previewed), recently closed and we have images from the exhibition installation for you here. The Canada-based Dave Cooper, who we last saw during a New York solo show, recently made the trip to Los Angeles to do more work on his recently green-lighted animated series with Nickelodeon. Pig Goat Banana Cricket was developed with Cooper in charge of art direction with Johnny Ryan writing for the children’s network, who have ordered 26 episodes to begin with. As you can see from the lush backgrounds and character design (better seen in pilot video below – note cricket exchanged for mantis), Cooper’s influence is definitely evident. […]
Last month, AM stopped by the original Record Plant in New York to check out the largest outdoor mural to date from Faile (featured). Designed by the Patrick’s and painted by Colossal Media, the massive piece on the side of the building in Hell’s Kitchen features some of the collective’s signature imagery. Last month, we stopped by the Jonathan LeVine Gallery to check out a new solo show from Masakatsu Sashie (featured). Included in the exhibition entitled Coacervate (Latin for “to assemble together or cluster”) of course were different permutations of the fan-favorite globes created out of buildings, appliances, vending machines, and other urban man-made elements, but also seen was an impressive sculptural representation (seen above) of the Japanese artist’s signature imagery.
