Loakal Gallery’s next exhibition looks to be an interesting one. The Oakland space is hosting a solo exhibition by Terry Furry entitled Intimate Strangers. The subject matter of the exhibition contains voyeuristic portraits graphically rendered in oils. The paintings are framed as snapshots as if captured and exchanged on cell phones and are reminiscent of the aesthetic of the so called ‘selfie-culture’. Jud Bergeron’s current exhibition Becoming carries its special little story on how it came to be. Last month, myplasticheart in New York hosted a solo show from Jeremiah Ketner (interviewed) entitled Ideal World. The new body of work featured the feel good imagery typically seen from the Chicago-based artist painted in bright colors. Ketner’s female and fairy-like characters frolic and play in a tranquil natural world full of flowers, vines, and gardens – certainly one artist’s interpretation of utopia. Earlier this month, the Buddy System Invitational (curated by Sven Davis) opened at the Breeze Block Gallery in Portland. On September 27th, Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) will be unveiling new sculptural installations in Hong Kong’s Time Square. Presented by LeBasse Projects, the large heads (see below) that look like the ones often seen in the LA-based artist’s work will be interacting with passer-bys in one of the busiest areas in Causeway Bay. Over the weekend, the Fabien Castanier Gallery presented new works from L’Atlas & Canto collectively entitled PARALLELS. Aptly named, the exhibition not only refers the nationality of the two French artists, but the similarities in their aesthetic that both involve abstraction, precise patterning, and geometric tendencies. The series of paintings and installations they produced do pair nicely when viewed together and certainly show that the two have come far since their time on the streets. Here’s a show that a few people are looking forward to. Unnatural Histories II is the follow up to last year’s group exhibition at Portland’s Antler Gallery. Opening on 26th September, the exhibition calls for each participating artist to create a natural history inspired portrait of a mythical creature.
