Over the weekend, the Merry Karnowsky gallery unveiled to the public their latest exhibition, one which featured the incredible photography of the late Vivian Maier. Admirers of gems and photo-realistic painting technique will enjoy our Art Focus this week on Carly Waito. The Toronto-based artist and graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design chooses specimens of semi-precious gems and minerals, photographs them in macroscopic detail, and then renders them in oil paints with meticulous care. While his compadre, Italian street artist Blu was painting up Buenos Aires (here, here, and here), it looks like Escif tagged along (you may also remember their back to back efforts together in Spain here) to work on some walls of his own. His contribution to the Argentinian city-scape is an entertaining step-by-step rendition of how to open a locked door with a credit-card. *Correction* this is a collaboration piece with Blu. Continuing his whirlwind books signing tour, James Jean (featured) will be at the Nucleus Gallery this Saturday, January 14th (6-9pm) in Southern California. Spots he has already hit up that we had the chance to attend include Reed Space in NYC and the LACMA, where we walked away impressed with the beautiful reproduction of his paintings from the Rebus show at Martha Otero’s in the 240 page publication. Last night, AM was invited for a early viewing of Futura’s show at Jerome de Noirmont in Paris. The exhibition entitled Expansions was a fresh collection of works created by the New York graffiti legend.
