An art fair based on an interesting premise opened this weekend – the VIP Art Fair. As online sales have increased when compared to in-person sales at most galleries, it was only natural that a virtual art fair be the next “big idea”. What is surprising though are the heavyhitters that are backing it. Look at some of these founding galleries – David Zwirner, Gagosian, White Cube, and exhibiting galleries – Blum & Poe, Paul Kasmin, Gladstone, Emmanuel Perrotin, Perry Rubenstein. It seems collectors were […]

Opening tonight, January 22nd, at the Copro Gallery is a sculptural group show, entitled Conjoined, conceived in the twisted artistic mind of Chet Zar. With this curatorial turn, he takes an opportunity to bring to the gallery some of the sculptural skills he is known for in the motion-picture industry as well as inviting a bunch of his friends and artists to participate in this three-dimensional homage to the dark visual arts. Also of note, besides the 4 ‘ masterpiece he is contributing to the […]

We’ve showed you some of Dain’s gallery work in the past (New York ’09, Paris ’10), but not much of his street work. It looks like what may be new pieces have popped up recently in Brooklyn and luckily for us, the Brooklynite Gallery was around to document it. More after the jump…

Tomorrow night, January 22nd, LeBasse Projects will bring in a Korean wave of talent to it’s Culver City showspace with their newest exhibition Ahn-Nyung or Hello. Curated by Jae Yang, the show features the works of four artists – Hyung Kwan Kim, Seok Kim, Yeonju Sung, and of particular interest to us here at AM – Jin Young Yu. You may remember our interview with her a couple years ago after her delicate and emotive sculptural works caught our eyes at an art fair. Take […]

AM got all enthused late last year over Kid Acne’s solo show (covered) at Concrete Hermit entitled When the Smoke Clears. For us, the defining part of the installation was the wall of small one-off screenprinted drawings in all their black and pink splendour. Well, if that monochromatic installation floats your boat, you can now thumb through the series of drawings in Kid Acne’s brand new When the Smoke Clears Zine. Produced with a screenprinted, embossed and numbered cover, the 52 page zine is available […]

It looks like our friend Ellis Gallagher’s (interviewed) is setting up for his latest show Temporarily Permanent, a title that certainly describes the state of street art, especially when mostly done with chalk in his case. With this newest endeavor, Ellis is putting on a show in NYC again, with the first being at Collective Hardware in 2009. Head over to the Mighty Tanaka tomorrow night, January 21st, if you are interested because for the first time, original shadow & chalk drawings will be available […]

AM has been following the work of R.M. Phoenix and the journey he has taken with his art over the last couple of years since being first introduced by mutual friends Chloe Early and Conor Harrington. His most recent body of work comes to completion with his solo exhibition entitled Nobody’s Fault But Mine Yours Ours Mine opening at And/Or Gallery in East London, this Saturday 22nd January. Rob’s work has evolved from a series of fluid oil paintings where he beautifully captured light and […]

In his first exhibit with Seattle-based Roq La Rue since 2009’s Requiarium (covered), Brian Despain (interviewed) is primed and ready with a whole bag of new tricks for his upcoming show next month. Opening Friday, February 11th, Tin Machines and Mercuric Dreams will continue to highlight the artist’s expertise with the brush, with a new series of brilliantly rendered oil paintings of his personable robot characters in desolate landscapes rife with iconography and symbolism for the viewer to draw meaning and inspiration from. This exhibit, […]

Art Stage Singapore, a new international art fair opened and closed last week with reports of strong sales, 32,000 visitors, and work shown by 121 galleries from 26 countries. The art world will be seeing more events like these in the region as Asia grows in importance. Of course, there was art shown that will be of interest to our readers like the Adam Neate pieces we mentioned earlier this month. Take a look at some images we gathered after the jump courtesy of toysrevil, […]

Fresh off a “distorted” reinterpretation of his iconic Companion figure with Robert Lazzarini (covered), KAWS has now teamed up with The Standard for a collaborative project aimed at spicing up the interior lighting of the contemporary art collector’s home. The art-inspired boutique hotel chain, which played host to an intimate book signing with the artist during Basel Week Miami (covered), has been partnering with artists for a while now through their lifestyle product arm, The Standard Culture. As KAWS describes, “I love The Standard and […]

Brett Amory (interviewed) made his UK debut with style last week and AM went along to the opening of Intentional Abstractions to see his emotive work for ourselves. The Lazarides-run Outsiders Gallery has put on some great shows since the concept of this small gallery space was refocused last year. This latest exhibit shows further commitment to bringing an exciting roster of emerging art talent to its London exhibition space. We’ve been admirers of Brett’s work for a while, but it was good to see […]
