Earlier this month, San Diego based artist Kelsey Brookes was part of a three-person show at New Image Art entitled “New Eclipse”. For this show, not only did Brookes include his colorful and abstract “explosion” paintings, he also added a twist – spinners and puzzles. The spinners were paintings that spun in place while hung on the wall (video here) and the puzzles were pieces that included interchangeable parts so that collectors could rearrange them at will. Andrea Michaelsson of Btoy fame recently posted up images of some work she did in Warsaw recently. The Barcelona-based artist worked over some benches at a railway station with her soft imagery. She was in town for a show at a local cafe, Cafe Spokojna, where she showcased originals, prints as well as redoing the cafe doors. More images after the jump…
AM recently stopped by the Joshua Liner Gallery to check out a copy of Ryan McLennan’s new book “The Cost of Comfort”. Published by Triple Stamp Press, the special edition book is actually a loose-leaf art book that contains 20 specially selected 9″x12″ giclee prints and comes encased in a custom made pine/birch wood box. On Thursday night, Munky King unveiled their newest product, the Omi mask, with a release party at Bar Basic in San Diego. Of more interest to us, was the live painting on larger replica masks that went down at the event featuring Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) , Joe Ledbetter, Aaron “Angry Woebots” Martin, and David Flores. Jeremy Fish (featured) “The Road Less Traveled Tour,” which started in Denver, has reached it’s last stop at Fifty24PDX, Upper Playground Portland branch. As usual, the Fish mobile, Jeremy’s infamous van, was on site, bringing with it paintings, prints, books, and of course the man of the hour. If you remember, AM recently brought you a first look at the KAWS museum show at The Aldrich as well as a peek at the upcoming Pinnochio and Jiminy Cricket figures. Apparently, High Snobiety also made the trek out to Connecticut and put together a nice video capturing footage of the paintings, installations, drawings, sculptural work, and art products that were part of the massive retrospective. Nancy Rubins, whose monumental sculptures are prominently on outdoor display at MOCA Los Angeles and MOCA San Diego, now takes over the inside one of Southern California’s finest galleries – Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills. The artist has built two spectacular sculptures in the recently unveiled addition to the gallery.
