Openings: Mark Dean Veca @ UAG – UCSD

Mark Dean Veca, who we just interviewed a couple days ago, opened up his show last night at the UAG gallery.Â We had only seen the nice in-progress setup previously, but the finished installation looks even more amazing.Â The show runs till March 15th, so stop by for a look if you have a chance.Â As mentioned before, he will also doing an “artist talk” on February 26th if you are interested in attending.Â We gathered some images for you to peruse after the jump.

Last night, AM stopped by Stolen Spaceâ€™s Dray Walk Gallery and saw a good turn out for the opening of Brad Downeyâ€™s “An Honest Thief” show which runs until the 8th of February. To celebrate Upper Playground’s 10th Anniversary, Sam Flores has decided to give away a large painting (6 x 4 feet) to one lucky fan. The medium is acrylic and spray paint on wood framed canvas. Google Icon x Jackson Pollock

Google is celebrating influential American abstract expressionist painter Jackson Pollock’s birthday today with their ever changing icon at the top of their search page. We wonder what percentage of people who use google everyday actually recognized the reference. Preview/Interviews: Craola @ Fifty24SF

Greg Simkins, or as he is popularly known, Craola (something he kept from his graffiti days) is opening his first show of 2009 at Fifty24SF on February 5th. His show “Seeing Things” (teased) expands on the pseudo still life format he has been working on, and the fact there is something alive in the arrangement that makes you take a second look. Benefit: Herakut @ Phillips de Pury

Herakut (interviewed) will be participating in a benefit auction for the charity War Child (viewing March 10-12, auction March 14) with Phillips de Pury. Not only will the canvas “You Sure?” be up for bidding, but there will also be other works on display (in progress) pieces showing the level of completion of a single piece.
