On November 16th, the Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong will be welcoming in Thinkspace to curate a group show at their showspace (like we did for our East West Connect show last year). Slated to contribute pieces for the show are artists Amy Sol, Audrey Kawasaki, Brian M. Viveros, Dabs Myla, Esao Andrews, Joao Ruas, Linnea Strid, and Yosuke Ueno. If the trippy new piece from Andrews (seen above) is any indication, art fans in Hong Kong will want to make it out this opening for […]

Faile in Mongolia (Part 1)

Over the years we have followed FAILE to China, Spain, the UK and way too many remote locations to list, but never did we expect to be crossing the seas to a place where the horse runs wild, Buddhism is the law of the land and the beef is no doubt to die for. That’s right ladies and gentleman, FAILE is headed to Ulan Bator, Mongolia, working in collaboration with Mongolian Sculptor, Bat Munkh and Arrested Motion is going to be bringing you all the […]

Upcoming: Clare Rojas – “Pith” @ PRISM

On October 19th, Clare Rojas will be opening her second solo showing (see 2011) at the PRISM Gallery in Los Angeles. Entitled Pith, the new body of work continues the Bay Area-based artist’s recent exploration of abstraction with the removal of her classic figures from her work. The new paintings, done in oil instead of her typical acrylic, appear to still use the palette familiar to most of her fans but is focused on “abstract space and the blurring between architectural dimensionality and geometric flatness.” […]

As usual, the showing (this year entitled Baby Tattooville Inside Out: A Private Affair Made Public) featured work from the artists who were participating in this year’s art retreat including Coop, Mark Frauenfelder, Brandi Milne (seen above), Nouar, Kathie Olivas, Nathan Ota, Brandt Peters, Ragnar, Rob Reger, and RISK, all who made it out to the opening reception. Discuss Baby Tattooville here.

Streets: David Ellis – Mobile Arts (NYC)

We recently caught up with New York artist David Ellis as he completed a mobile arts project. The Barnstormer and Pulse prize winner took two white freight trucks and transformed them in wild Ellis fashion. Giving them color and life, Ellis worked all facets of the exterior in the diverse styles we’ve become accustomed to seeing from him. Keep your eyes peeled if you’re ever in New York and you may catch one of these beasts prowling through the streets. Discuss David Ellis here.

Preview: Seonna Hong – “Persistence of Vision” @ LeBasse Projects

Next Saturday, October 13th, at the Culver City LeBasse Projects, new works from Seonna Hong (interviewed) will be unveiled in an exhibition entitled Persistence of Vision. This is her first solo with the gallery and her first in Los Angeles in seven years, so fans of her work don’t want to miss this show. The new paintings delve into the ideas of perception and visual memory with her familiar girls and bears placed in abstract environments. Also present will be her recent exploration of the use of […]

Openings: “Nailed” @ Subliminal Projects

Nailed is a counter-culture / couture show in some respects, give or take a small stretch of the imagination. Put on by Subliminal Projects and based on a book of the same name, photographers from around the globe and all walks of life were commissioned to document nail artists, and their clientele. It is certainly an art form that has been overlooked, for better or for worst. During tonight’s closing reception, the exhibiton will turn the gallery into a make-shift (Imperial) nail salon with music, drinks […]

Preview / Studio Visit: Mark Warren Jacques – ‘Each Story In This Story Has A Story’ @ Breeze Block Gallery

AM has always seen Mark Warren Jacques (interviewed) as much as a storyteller as an artist since we became immersed in his work a number of years ago. His latest solo exhibition opens this Thursday at Portland’s Breeze Block Gallery and is entitled Each Story In This Story Has A Story. Heartfelt sentiments interlaced with abstracted narrative, explosive colours and the very tightest of line-work are just some of the elements that are to be found within his work. We got to spend some time with Mark and […]
