Openings: ROA – “Transit” @ Skalitzers (Berlin)

Last Saturday night in Berlin, ROA returns to Germany (see Cologne 2010) and transformed Skalitzers into a personal playground for his anatomically exposed creatures. Employing wall murals, including one that cleverly incorporates a doorway, as well as movable paintings on found objects, showgoers were invited to play and interact with the Belgium-based artist’s new work collectively entitled Transit. More photos taken for us by Henrik Haven after the jump.

Preview: Brandon Shigeta – “ARTCUBE” @ Little Tokyo Design Week

If you have been following AM on a regular basis, you will probably have come across photographs from the talented Brandon Shigeta as he hit up shows, events, and street work in progress for us.  Now, for Little Tokyo Design Week (LTDW), Brandon has compiled some of his favorite photos and assembled it into an ARTCUBE installation including images from Retna, Push, Barbara Kruger, David Choe, James Jean, Shark Toof, Ryan Mcginness, Patrick Martinez, Aaron De La Cruz, Dalek, Revok, Eklips, Haroshi, Kami & Sasu, […]

Openings: Jeremy Fish – “Listen and Learn” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

A couple weeks ago, AM caught the opening of Jeremy Fish’s (featured) exhibition at the Joshua Liner Gallery. The show Listen and Learn showcased not only the bold and complex characters that make up Jeremy’s cartoon-like style, but also the stories of multiple angles told from the viewpoints of different people from all walks of life. With the Snoop Dogg collaboration video we teased you with for comparison, you can see the diversity of focus as the other subjects included skateboarders, strippers, athletes, and more. Each person not […]

Showing: Delta @ kunstraum.ch (Switzerland)

After hanging up his distinctive large-scale sculptural pieces in March at the Muziekgebouw Concert Hall in his home-city of Amsterdam (covered), Boris Tellegen aka Delta moved on to his next project, this time in the epicenter of art fair world – Basel, Switzerland. One of the most respected old-school writers from Amsterdam, Delta continues to explore his post-graf abstract aesthetic with this transformation of the kunstraum.ch artspace into an immersive installation.  The exhibition will be on view through September 10th so stop by if you […]

Openings: Barry McGee @ Stuart Shave/Modern Art, London

AM has been keeping a watchful eye on Continental European shows featuring works by Barry McGee. Whenever the cashflow gods have been on our side, we’ve booked the necessary flights or trains to attend as well. This was the case with the 2010 joint show with Danish artist HuskMitNavn at A.L.I.C.E. Gallery in Brussels, and the 2009 three-man show (which also included Ed Templeton and Raymond Pettibon) curated by Aaron Rose at Berlin’s Circleculture Gallery. However, the last time McGee exhibited in the UK was […]

Kickstarter – Swoon’s Musical Architecture for New Orleans

It seems more and more artists are moving towards using Kickstarter as an avenue to fund their creative projects.  We’ve touched on some before like next year’s POW WOW, the Kenny Scharf documentary, and Kevin Cyr’s Camper Kart, but this next idea we bring you is just as worthy of your support. Brooklyn-based Swoon has a dream of building a permanent interactive structure in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans that she will call Dithyrambalina. “It will look like a house, but it will function […]

Swoon – “Thalassa” Installation @ New Orleans Museum of Art

Look familiar?  Yes, it’s another sweet installation from Swoon (interviewed), this time at the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA). Just as stunning as her light-infused piece from the Art in the Streets exhibition, this suspended ocean goddess is entitled Thalassa and is made of wood & paper and located above NOMA’s Great Hall with layered tentacles created from scavenged materials stretching to the mezzanine. Inspired by her reaction to the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster, the piece will be on display until September 25th. Take a look at photos […]

Openings: FriendsWithYou – “Rainbow City” @ High Line (New York)

Wednesday night saw the transport of FriendsWithYou’s massive installation Rainbow City (first seen in Miami) to New York to celebrate the opening of Section 2 of the High Line. The air-filled structures, some up to 40 feet high, from Sam and Tury, who make up the Miami based collective are sculptural representations of their colorful abstractions, 0f which some smaller versions were seen at The Hole last night (more on that later). For now, enjoy more photos of the immersive playground after the jump…

Openings: Kaws – “Passing Through” Companion @ The Standard (NY)

Today, AM was on hand to catch the arrival of the mother of all Kaws Companions (so far). This Passing Through Companion was hauled over from the backyard of the Aldrich Contemporary Museum, where it was last exhibited and dropped off in the front yard of The Standard Hotel in New York. When we stopped by, the crew was busy creating the platform for the figure, while tourists of the trendy Meatpacking district kept stopping to take pictures of the imposing sculpture. We even tried […]

Update: FriendsWithYou – “:)” @ The Hole & “Rainbow City” NYC

Next Thursday, June 9th, at The Hole in New York, Miami based art collective FriendsWithYou will be introducing a new body of work simply titled with a smiley face emoticon. The name of the show is in line with their eternally cheerful & uplifting persona, and will feature what sounds like an immersive installation of their geometric abstractions. Presented in collaboration with Native Shoes, the exhibition is but only a portion of FWY’s “New York City cultural ambassadorship tour.” The duo will also be transporting […]
