Charity: Lucy McLauchlan Auction for Sound It Out

Lucy McLauchlan just set up an installation at 48Sheet Gallery in Birmingham to benefit Sound It Out: a charity that strives to bring support and opportunities in music to deprived people in Birmingham and the West Midlands. This is part of the Tambourine Project in which artists and celebrities (which includes Ricky Gervais, Raymond Briggs, Helen Mirren, Stephen Fry, Eric Clapton and Log Roper) were asked to doodle on the instrument and have them auctioned off on Ebay (listings can be seen: here). Currently on auction at White Columns are works from over 80 artists to benefit the not-for-profit gallery near the border of West Village and the Meat Packing District in New York. Since 1970, hundreds of artists have benefited from their early exposure and support so head over to view the works on display, which are now available for bidding in a silent auction. A couple months ago, we shared with you a project from Samsung where Tim Biskup was asked to re-imagine the sad face emoticon. It turns out other artists were asked to do the same thing with some of the other more common emoticons and acronyms including AJ Fosik, Megan Whitmarsh, Steven Harrington, Reza Ali, as well as Craig & Karl (see video after the jump). AM recently had the chance to stop by The Brooklyn Academy of Music’s (BAM) annual silent auction to take a look at the artwork up for bid. This being their 150th anniversary, BAM got a gaggle of great artwork donated by some impressive artists working in the greater New York area such as Nate Lowman, Carmen Herrera, Tauba Auerbach, KAWS, Ryan McGinness, Jacob Kassay, Terrance Koh and many more. Tonight in London, the Bonhams Urban Art Auction will be getting underway. With the pieces that are made available for bidding and the results of great interest to collectors out there, all eyes will be on the lots up for sale including many familiar names and some new ones. Opening tonight at the White Walls Gallery tonight in San Francisco will be a charity show benefiting the Oceanic Awareness Collaboration. The Art on the Move auction features originals and limited editions from a long list of artists including Brian Viveros, Shepard Fairey, Peter Gronquist, Jacub Gagnon, Luke Chueh, Charlie Immer, Pedro Matos, and more. Coming up this Saturday, February 18th, there will be an ebay charity auction started that might interest some of our readers. A group of artists including Audrey Kawasaki, Olly Moss, Ken Garduno, and more will be donating original works and limited editions in support of Jakarta Or Bust, one of the teams doing the Rickshaw Run, a race utilizing an auto rickshaw over 1800 miles of South East Asia organized by a group called The Adventurists with all proceeds going to Birdlife International and Action Against Hunger. Last weekend, the non-profit Luggage Store Gallery held a benefit auction to support their efforts in programming future exhibitions, Tenderloin National Forest, public art programs, artist in residency as well as the Short Cuts and The Creative Music Series. Much of the works that were up for auction were by artists the gallery supported in the early stages of their careers. The other night, we attended a great event held at the Wooster St. Social Club for Aidan Has A Posse, a website raising funds for and awareness about Aidan Seeger. Aidan is a young boy who has Adrenoleukodystrophy   (ALD), a rare neurological disorder. We recently broke news of a special benefit auction, New Day, created by Takashi Murakami’s Kaikai Kiki Co. & Christie’s to help the victims of the tragic Tohoku-Pacific Earthquake.
