With the opening booked for April 7th, the Tropico Post – Apocalyptic group exhibition artists will be filling the Extra Extra Gallery in Philadelphia with their work soon. Gideon Chase, Rachel de Joode, Joe Lacina, Alex Lukas, Matthew Palladino and Erin M. Last week in San Francisco, Alex Lukas brought his post-apocalyptic visions to the Guerrero Gallery, featuring submerged metropolis, overgrown skyscrapers, and derelict cities. Utilizing a complex technique on paper that includes ink, acrylic, watercolor, gouache and silk screen, the Philadelphia based artist paints a desolate future where humans may play no part, focusing on the fragility of our modern society. Alex Lukas continues to delight us here at AM with each series of his distressed cityscapes, and judging by the work in his upcoming untitled solo exhibition at San Francisco’s Guerrero Gallery, he continues to go from strength to strength. Lukas’ representations of global mortality are realised in a series of paintings showing a graffiti’d and desolate landscape in a post-human / post apocalyptic context. A couple Saturdays ago, Show & Tell Gallery played host to a cohesive group show from Kevin Cyr (interviewed), Mike Shankman, Jeff Gillette, Joshua Barndt, and Alex Lukas entitled Atrophic Existence. Along with some pretty nice pieces from a group of painters whose work focuses on urban decay and disintegration, Gillette also brought some beautiful sculptural renderings of his shantytown structures and you could not miss the massive central installation from Barndt entitled The World is a Mountain and Everything Gets Buried. Show & Tell Gallery looks set to round off a fine year with a fine group showing, Atrophic Existence, opening on December 11th. Kevin Cyr (interviewed), Mike Shankman, Jeff Gillette, and Alex Lukas all will be exhibiting new paintings with the shared theme of decay and disintegration of the urban landscape. One of the shows that opened tonight at the Guerrero Gallery was Alex Lukas’ solo “These Are The Days of Miracle and Wonder”. Along with the post-apocalyptic imagery that has captivated fans of the Philadelphia-based artist, Lukas brings back some of the desolate landscapes he has worked on in the past but now with more detail and cohesive composition. Alex Lukas and Matt Leines are about to show at Guerrero Gallery this weekend, May 8th, and both artists look to be showing some new direction. With Alex we were looking forward to seeing urban environments which are often used to depict a not so distant future where a disaster has overtaken mankind. We recently stopped by Glowlab in NYC to check out “The Eventuality of Daybreak,” the new body of work from Alex Lukas. The solo exhibition from the Philly-based artist revealed a batch of works that highlighted desolate apocalyptic landscapes of major cities which depict a possible near future where these metropolises are literally submerged through coastal flooding.
