Openings: “Space//Squared” @ White Walls Gallery

Last month, White Walls Gallery in San Francisco opened a group exhibition entitled Space//Squared. Curated by Sven Davis, the showing was a followup to an event last year in Portland (covered). This time around, participating artists were again asked to contribute artwork in a 10 x 10″ format. Along with pieces from over 100 artists (list seen below), Adam Friedman and Robert Minervini also created a site-specific installation featuring a series of paintings interspersed throughout mural elements. Publications: Alex Lukas – “SAIII, JS, JT” Zine

Chicago-based artist Alex Lukas recently released a new self-published art book in the form of SAIII, JS, JT. The 56-page book contains a selection of different print mediums including color and B&W photocopy with risograph pages, with a number of fold-out spreads. SAIII, JS, JT is the fifth book in his ongoing series of publications titled by random and hard to pronounce found graffiti slogans. Previous titles have been VIID, DMM, RTMA, ANFX. Fans of Alex Lukas may want to pick up this new zine he released entitled RTMA. Chock full of recent works, photos that may have inspired his work, shots of gallery installations (like his recent show in San Francisco) and more, the 72 page booklet will get you up to date on the Philadelphia-based artist. Over the weekend, fans of Alex Lukas in the Bay Area saw the return of the Philadelphia-based artist to Guerrero Gallery with a new solo show. Along with what was seen during our studio visit with Lukas featuring his signature dsytopian imagery and submerged cities, the fresh pieces also included some interesting new developments. Breeze Block Gallery opened their huge group show Wider than a postcard (previewed) alongside the first solo show in their new gallery 2 space – olive47’s bonita bonita (featured) a couple of weeks back to a packed Portland crowd. Over 400 individual works went into the postcard show with 200 artists providing postcard sized works. Studio Visit: Alex Lukas @ Guerrero Gallery

As an encore to his shows in 2010 and 2011 at the Guerrero Gallery, the Philadelphia-based artist will be opening a new solo at the San Francisco showspace this Saturday (May 11th). Reinterpreting American landscapes with a post-apocalyptic tilt, Lukas’ work imagines a possible desolate future filled with of destruction and violence. On the back of his Space//Form group exhibition last year (covered), Arrested Motion’s Sven Davis is working with Breeze Block Gallery in Portland again on another huge group event entitled Wider than a postcard.
