Anish Kapoor – “ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower” Completed

Anish Kapoor’s (with help from structural designer Cecil Balmond) twisting tower next to the Olympic stadium in London that we first mentioned last year has been completed ahead of the summer games for 2012. Dubbed the “ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower” due to steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, the chairman of ArcelorMittal, investing £19.6 million in the £22.7 million project, the 114.5 metres tall looping sculpture will dominate the skyline as UK’s tallest structure and feature two observation floors, a 455-step spiral staircase, an elevator, and a restaurant. Basel Week Miami ’11: Art Basel – First Look (Part II)

With so much eye candy at the main fair, we had to split out photos into two helpings. Headlining this second set are these clusters from Bay Area legend Barry McGee at the Cheim & Read booth featuring some abstract representations of spray cans arranged in a new way with some novel patterns. Other strong pieces seen were a unique piece from Mark Ryden utilizing a new technique, an oil from Lisa Yuskavage, various shiny objects from Anish Kapoor, and much more. See it all [...]

Frieze ’11: Overview

London’s Frieze week kicked off properly on Wednesday 12 October with the preview for Frieze Art Fair in Regent’s Park. AM has long been a Frieze enthusiast. The calibre of its exhibitors and their booths makes most other contemporary art fairs look provincial in comparison. Conscious of the international spotlight, the big fish bring out the big guns and do whatever else they can to retain their dominance, while the ambitious smaller galleries pull out the stops to try raising the bar even higher for [...]

Italian Coffee maker illy has commissioned the famous Indian artist to design this year’s artist cup for their prestigious Art Collection which has seen collaborations with some of art’s most celebrated artists such as Jeff Koons, Louise Bourgeois and Robert Rauschenberg. At first glance, one may notice that this cup and saucer garners the same perfectly polished metallic surface that we’ve come to expect from many of Kapoor’s iconic [...]

Anish Kapoor – “Leviathan” @ Grand Palais (Paris)

Anish Kapoor, who recently returned to India to open his first solo exhibition there, has now traveled to Paris, the site of his first ever exhibition 30 years ago, to unveil Leviathan. The 35 meter tall work made from PVC is 13,500 square meters when inflated, forming a cathedral-like space inside (which viewers can enter) creating the illusion of being inside a giant whale. Kapoor has dedicated this new massive work, currently showing at the Monumenta exhibition in Paris’ Grand Palais, to Chinese activist and [...]

Openings: Black Swan @ Regen Projects

Oscar Weekend, AM attended the Black Swan inspired group show at Regen Projects, which featured an A-list lineup with names like Matthew Barney, Richard Prince, Dan Graham, Glenn Ligon, and Anish Kapoor. The exhibion explores the illusion of dualities described in Darren Aronofsky’s chilling psycho-drama: black vs. white, purity vs. sexuality, and apparition vs. reality. The works strive to examine the tension between these spaces, deconstructing their presumed boundaries. The pieces quite literally reflect this sentiment, with black and white monochrome images paired with reflective [...]
