Showing: Brad Downey – ‘Souvenirs’ @ Ruttkowski;68

Ruttkowski;68 gallery in Cologne, Germany recently opened a new solo by American artist Brad Downey. Titled Souvenirs, the show features short videos and a series of everyday objects and utilitarian materials juxtapozed in a new context creating a novel meaning. The work raises issues about everything from identity (with his flags drawings), privacy, to self destruction. His series of works with keys touchbase on the notion of access and security. With his techniques of détournement and re-contextualization, Downey reinterprets banal objects to create revelatory artworks. These act as ‘souvenirs‘ as […]

“The Tent” by Brad Downey and Igor Ponosov (Crimea)

Having worked on many projects together over the years despite their geographical differences and language barrier, American artist Brad Downey and Russian artist Igor Ponosov have always hoped to do a project in Ukraine one day. Earlier this year, when Russian president Putin announced that he wanted to “protect the interests of the Russian-speaking population in Crimea,” the artists decided it was time for an art intervention in Ukraine. They wanted draw attention to the complex political situation, highlighting the conflicts of interest between the West and Russia. Acting […]

Streets: Brad Downey (Denmark)

After sharing some photos of Sam3’s pieces for the Public Art project in Horsens, Denmark, we now have some shots of another participant, Brad Downey. As opposed to the typical street artist, Downey’s work is more conceptual in nature and often takes advantage of existing urban elements that he exploits in which he sees natural irony or subtle metaphors. Take a look at the American artist working in the photos below, as well some of the completed interventions (three at the port and three in the center of town). Photo […]

Rewind: June 25 – July 1

Legendary artist David Lynch recently got together with Dom Pérignon for a collaborative project. The American filmmaker, television director, visual artist, musician, and actor designed some limited versions of the Champagne brand’s bottles along with the packaging featuring the theme of flickering lights. The process was documented on a short film seen below, but you can also see some of the photos and an interview here. More videos of the week: Mike Leavitt was added as part of the ongoing ArtTalk series. John Baldessari explain his views of the internet’s impact […]

Openings: “The Rejects” @ Reed Projects Gallery

Last weekend in Norway, the inaugural show at Reed Projects Gallery, The Rejects, opened featuring work from Vhils, Roa, Escif, Dolk, Evol, Dan Witz and Brad Downey. The new showspace is the brainchild of the same people behind the annual Nuart Festival in Stavenger and presumably will now become the indoor gallery of those artists involved. Take a look at more photos from the opening below… Photo credit: Erik Sæter Jørgensen.

This will be a five year anniversary celebration so expect surprises like more music to be involved this year in the programming. […]

Frieze Art Fair 2011: Highlights (Part II)

Following our earlier coverage of London’s Frieze Art Fair, AM made a return visit before it closed last weekend to spend a few more hours considering the curation and presentation of exhibitor booths along with the individual works on display. See more commentary and additional photos of what caught our eye after the jump. By way of advance notice, in more traditional working environments, a couple of images (especially in the gallery section) would probably be deemed NSFW. So don’t blame us if a colleague […]

Take a look at more pics sent to us from […]

Streets: Brad Downey in Lisbon (Crono Project)

In addition, Downey’s work features in the group show What Is Contemporary Art? which opened Friday at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde, Denmark. Later in March, he’s taking part in the group exhibition Wilde Zeichen at the Kunsthalle Krems museum in Krems, Austria. In a post […]

Streets: MOMO in London

Following a brief stint alongside Brad Downey and Vhils in Lisbon, Portugal as part of the ongoing and impressive Crono project (featured here and here), MOMO arranged a short stay in the UK before heading back earlier this week to his latest base in security-challenged New Orleans. For want of a more appropriate euphemism, it was an interesting few days at the AM London residence. The artist’s arrival overlapped with a visit by Christian Coinbergh’s “Gang of Three” from Stockholm – the latter in town […]
