Recap: 2019 Complexcon (Long Beach)

Last weekend, the fourth edition of ComplexCon (also see 2016 & 2017 & 2018) Long Beach once again bought together “pop culture, music, art, food, style, sports, innovation, activism, and education” for a unique event. Of course we were there focusing on the art, overseen by Takashi Murakami who once again helped design the brand identity as well as took the opportunity to bring along some of his Kaikai Kiki roster. Take a look at their contributions to this year’s festival as well as photos from other artist’s and their offerings. […]

Showing: Beyond The Streets (NYC)

After an inaugural showing last year in Los Angeles (covered), it was only a matter of time before the BEYOND THE STREETS  hit what many consider one of the birth places of graffiti in the US. New York’s version of the exhibition (curated by Roger Gastman) celebrating graffiti, street art, and beyond once again featured a stunning roster of some of the most well known and seminal artists in the genre. Ranging from paintings, sculptures, photography, mural art to site-specific installations from 100+ artists, posting all the photos […]

Previews: Cleon Peterson – “Blood & Soil” @ Over The Influence (LA)

Tomorrow (July 7th), Cleon Peterson will be opening a brutal new show at the Los Angeles location of Over The Influence. Featuring new acrylic-on-canvas paintings, small bronze sculptures, and one large-scale sculpture, Blood & Soil will continue the locally-based artist’s provocative treatise on the dynamics of power, violence, and oppression. Taking the title of the exhibition from a Nazi slogan, Peterson takes an unflinching look at the rise of nationalism, populist fervor, economic inequality, and political corruption where the lawbreakers and law enforcers are one and the same in today’s […]

Upcoming: Cleon Peterson – “Shadow of Men” @ MCA Denver

This Friday (February 2nd), the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (MCA Denver) will be opening up an exhibition from Cleon Peterson spanning their entire second floor. Featuring the provocative artist’s starkly violent imagery, the show will put on display paintings, sculptures, and murals, including what looks to be a striking “wrap” of the building’s facade. If you plan to attend the winter opening celebration (also welcoming in new exhibitions from Diego Rodriguez-Warner and Arthur Jafa), you will need to procure tickets here. Discuss Cleon Peterson here.

Showing: Cleon Peterson – “VICTORY” @ Galerie Du Jour

Building on the momentum of his high profile mural at the Eiffel Tower last year (covered), Cleon Peterson has opened a new solo at Agnés B’s Galerie du Jour in Paris. Entitled VICTORY, the new body of work features sculptures and paintings of his instantly recognizable black and white characters entangled in vicious cycles of violence. He further explains – “This show explores the hedonistic triumphs of those who recognize themselves as victorious in the unfolding mirror of history. Their right to pleasure hinges on their projection of pain onto the […]

Upcoming: Cleon Peterson – “VICTORY” @ Galerie Du Jour

On January 11th, Cleon Peterson will be showing new work at Agnés B’s Galerie du Jour, his first solo in Paris. Entitled VICTORY, the exhibition will feature the American artist’s signature brutal and provocative imagery, a exaggerated reflection of the urban violence he saw firsthand in his youth. He further explains – “This show explores the hedonistic triumphs of those who recognize themselves as victorious in the unfolding mirror of history. Their right to pleasure hinges on their projection of pain onto the unvictorious other. This […]

Streets: Cleon Peterson // Nuit Blanche Paris @ Eiffel Tower

Following in the footsteps of Shepard Fairey (featured) of creating art at the Eiffel Tower (covered), Cleon Peterson has done something Mr. Obey has never had the opportunity to do – painting the first mural ever directly below the famed monument. Created for this year’s Nuit Blanche in Paris (organized by Palais de Tokyo), the piece is entitled Endless Sleep, a reference to the famous late-night cultural festival. The circular piece features the Los Angeles-based artist’s signature figures inspired by Greco-Roman frescos sans the usual provocative imagery. Discuss Cleon Peterson here.

Last month, the Los Angeles Public Library unveiled a new card designed by Shepard Fairey and Cleon Peterson. The first artist-designed, limited-edition library card made available at all 73 locations features an image of the historic Central Library, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2016. Shep further states – “My wife Amanda and I believe in the value of libraries to provide resources for the public, especially those who can’t afford decent computers or an extensive book collection. When I was younger, I did most of […]

Openings: “Mint Julep” @ Galleria Patricia Armocida

As part of their pre-summer program, Galleria Patricia Armocida in Milan recently opened a group show titled Mint Julep. Featuring works by Maya Hayuk,  Cleon Peterson, Revok, and  Francesco Igory Deiana, the exhibition opened on May 18th and will stay on view through July 22nd. The idea of this show was to mix artists and their diverse styles into a fresh, attractive installation, similar to a Mint Julep cocktail, made by mixing bourbon, ice, sugar and mint into a refreshing drink. Viewers got to see Hayuk’s colorful, layered weave paintings that balance between tradition, psychedelic, strict […]
