Auctions / Benefits: Christie’s “Artists for Haiti” Results

A couple weeks back, the Artists for Haiti benefit auction racked in massive numbers to a standing room only, celebrity studded audience at Christie’s Rockefeller Center salesroom in New York. Organized by David Zwirner (ranked 4th on last years ArtReview “Power 100″ list) and Ben Stiller, who has supported Haiti through his Stiller Foundation non-profit since the catastrophic earthquake, the charitable event brought together an inspired list of of contemporary art’s most important artists, such as Raymond Pettibon, Nate Lowman, Rudolf Stingel, Jasper Johns, Zuang […]

Happy 4th of July!

Everyone here at AM (at least on this side of the pond) wanted to wish you a happy fourth of July! We thought that we would take this opportunity to review some of the American Flags that have been reinterpreted over the years by artists we cover here. This is by no means an exhaustive list as the iconic symbol has been a very popular inspiration for artists whether it be a patriotic or anti-patriotic creation. More flags after the jump from artists including Aaron […]

Openings: Jasper Johns @ Matthew Marks

When the subject of “best living artist in the world” comes up, the one artist always on everyone’s list is Jasper Johns.  And with good reason.  The eighty-one year old legend is one of the most influential figures in art, almost single-handedly moving it away from Abstract Expressionism and laying the foundation for Pop and Minimalism.  His Flag paintings are as visible a part of American culture as  the hot rod or baseball. One of Johns’ best known series is his numbers works. Using the […]

Soon after Barack Obama took office, a rumor began flying around the art world that the president and first lady were planning to redecorate their personal living space within the White House with works of modern and contemporary art. Apparently, a little known perk of being President of the United States is that you get to use the Smithsonian, National Gallery and other DC museums as your personal collection. This week, the list of pieces that the Obamas will be borrowing was announced, and it […]

Lehman Brothers to sell art collection

We’ve all heard of the unfortunate events to hit the economy in recent months with major financial investment firms going bankrupt and many assets falling to zero. Apparently these major financial firms have been some of the biggest investors in the art world. Recently, Lehman asked a bankruptcy judge to approve a 20k payment to its art handlers in order to start showing their collection to potential buyers. Lehman needs sell off part of art collection to raise at least 8 million dollars. It seems that […]
