Banksy – “Dismaland” @ Tropicana (Weston Super Mare – UK), The Galleries

Along with main attractions (covered) of the fairground such as the game of tipping an anvil with a ping pong ball, sculptures and installations by Banksy scattered around the site, Dismaland has a large art gallery. Obviously, we’re not talking about the white cube kind of presentation, which is referenced by the ruined white walls in the main space, but still, this exhibition “comprise the finest collection of contemporary art ever assembled in a North Somerset seaside town.” The gallery show begins with Jenny Holzer’s electronic […]

Showing: Jessica Harrison – “Flash” @ Galerie LJ

Earlier this month, Jessica Harrison presented her first solo show in Paris at Galerie L.J. entitled Flash, a reference to tattoos which ties her new body of work together thematically. On display were a series that the Scottish artist is perhaps best known for, her play on classic porcelain figurines. For this particular group of sculptures, she has added body ink to the bodies of these ceramic ladies, surprising the viewer by altering something that is familiar. Rounding out the exhibition are also a series of three […]

Previews: Jessica Harrison – “FLASH” @ Galerie L.J.

This Thursday in Paris, May 15th, Galerie L.J. will be presenting the sculptural works of Jessica Harrison, her first solo exhibition in the French capital. Known for her way of twisting classical porcelain figurines (last seen by us in 2001) in unexpected ways with her artistic vision, the Scottish sculptor’s series of work set to be put on display will be no different. FLASH will see Harrison add tattoos to her delicate ladies, with the title of course referencing this fact. We look forward to seeing the […]

Jessica Harrison – “Broken” @ Jealous Gallery

A show that closed just last weekend at the Jealous Gallery in London was a collection of sculptures that might not be for the faint of heart. Broken (previewed), from Jessica Harrison, is comprised of a series of classic delicate figurines common in the UK but with a gory twist.  For this particular line of work from the multi-talented artist, the dancing ladies don’t let a little disembowelment or unroofing of their brains get in the way of their fun, seemingly oblivious to the various mutilations […]

Preview: Jessica Harrison – “Broken” @ Jealous Gallery

Jessica Harrison, whose bloody ceramic sculptures first caught our eyes at a group show last summer, will be opening a solo show later this month in London. Entitled Broken, a nod to the similarly named collection of figurines (Breaking), Harrison’s gory handiwork will be on display at the Jealous Gallery starting on April 28th. Fans of self-mutilation will have to make sure they stop by to check out the decapitated and disemboweled takes on these classic pieces if they are in town. More preview images […]

Openings: StolenSpace Summer Group Show

AM got to the opening of StolenSpace’s annual Summer Group Show last week to find a line of people queuing out of the door! A packed house came out to see what we found to be a very strong grouping of work from an interesting mix of artists, some old StolenSpace favorites, but a lot fresh names – some new to the gallery, and some new to the London scene. Chloe Early is one of our favorite painters from the StolenSpace roster, and her new […]

Preview: “Summer Group Show” @ StolenSpace Gallery

StolenSpace Gallery in London is hosting their annual summer group show tonight. As usual, the roster features some stalwarts from their stable of artists as well as mixing in some new talent. One of the pieces we look forward to checking out ourselves is “Rocketeers” from Chloe Early (interviewed). If this incredible painting is any indication, we are in for a treat when her next solo opens in October at the Corey Helford Gallery. More selected preview images from the group show which also includes […]
