Openings: KMNDZ – “One Step Beyond” @ Merry Karnowsky

Last week alongside Greg Simkin’s show at Merry Karnowsky, the works of Johnny Rodriguez (KMNDZ) collectively entitled One Step Beyond were also on display. This new set of paintings mark the first time Rodriguez has introduced human figures into imagery although signature touches like birds, bombs, beads, and palette are still evident. He states – “Aside from trying to push my art further and painting outside my comfort zone, the show is a love letter to all of my friends lost. It’s about sharing my [...]

Preview: Sea No Evil 2011

Time flies!  The annual Sea No Evil benefit auction ($10 donation required at the door) is fast approaching – in fact, it’s this Saturday, June 25th. It seems the lineup and art included in show just gets better each year (see 2010 and 2009), so you will want to be at the Riverside Municipal Auditorium starting at 6pm that night as She Wants Revenge will be playing and Captain Watson from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society will be speaking. But more importantly for >

Openings: KMNDZ – “The Heaviest” @ Fifty24SF

Last week, AM stopped by Fifty24SF, literally right next door to the Josh Keyes opening at Fecal Face (covered), to check out the new paintings from KMNDZ. The Los Angeles-based artist brought along his boys (they recently worked on a large-scale painting with him), up north to the show with him making it a family affair. Take a look at all the opening photos for The Heaviest after the jump…

Openings: Thinkspace Five Year Anniversary Show

Last Saturday night marked an important event at Thinkspace Gallery history – their five year anniversary! Drawing from a long list of artists, many whom got their first break at the Silverlake and now recently relocated to Culver City gallery, the walls were filled with great pieces from the contributors who wanted to make sure they paid proper tribute. Amidst the crowded rooms, we spotted KMNDZ (seen above), with his wall mural and mini-show. Take a look at his and all the rest of the [...]

We have more preview images for you after [...]

Baby Tattooville ’09: Sketches

As if the free giveaways, raffles and live paintings weren’t enough, Baby Tattooville actively encourages their artists to sketch away in the dozens of sketchbooks brought by the paying attendees. This year, AM got a chance to sit down with virtually every participating artist, as well as a few special guests. Check out the artists at work and some of the sketches we and other attendees received after the jump.
