Streets: El Mac (Toronto)

El Mac was finally able to leave the States for the first big mural project he has done out of the country since having struggled with health issues as of late. Thankfully, it looks like he has recovered nicely with his skills intact from the looks of this stunning piece that was commissioned by Eventscape in Toronto. The wall adjacent to the Gardiner Expressway was executed in collaboration with Montreal’s STARE and Toronto’s KWEST, who contributed on the background. El Mac x Prada – “In the Heart of the Multitude” Project

Last month during Milan Fashion Week, American artist El Mac was asked by Prada to participate in the In the Heart of the Multitude project. Guided by themes of beauty, femininity, and power, the LA-based street muralist created three murals that were used as the backdrop for the Spring/Summer ’14 Prada Women’s fashion show (see video below). Collectively, he entitled them Sueños y Polvo de Estrellas (Dreams and Stardust) and shared that they were inspired by the work of Alphonse Mucha. Discuss El Mac here.

Coming up on May 16th, Galerie Wolfsen in Denmark will be opening a new solo show from the Los Angeles-based El Mac. For an artist whose work looks just as impressive in the gallery as on the streets, this will be his first solo show in Europe and first one since 2010 (covered). Take a look at a couple preview photos of large scale paintings he has been working on including one looks to be a negative image. There is also a short preview video that […]

Streets: World Roundup (Dec 31 – Jan 6)

We start this month’s survey of street art with this sweet new piece from El Mac painted on what looks to be the side of a train car. The LA-based artist painted the portrait as a tribute to his friend and gifted photographer Estevan Oriol. Coincidentally, we shared a portrait of photographer Martha Cooper with you painted by Os Gemeos only earlier today. Other worthy walls featured this week come from M-City – India, Mar – California, ROA – Argentina (source), Sokram – Spain (source), Waone […]

El Mac Designs New No Doubt Album Cover

No Doubt will be putting out their first new album in over 10 years, Push and Shove, and street artist El Mac has been tapped to design the cover. Lead Singer Gwen Stefani and her husband Gavin have been fans of Miles’ work for a while and have his work in their collection, so it only seemed natural for them to contact him for the collaboration. After a photoshoot, the artist spent the next six weeks painting four separate acrylic wood panel portraits in his signature […]

Streets: El Mac (Barcelona)

Gifted street muralist El Mac is at it again, this time in Spain. This new piece was painted on the side of the Montana paint factory (a brand that he has used many times over the years) in Barcelona. Based on his model Lacheln, the wall done in a palette limited to black, gray and whites, and is a nice contrast to an adjacent mural by Os Gemeos. More photos after the jump…

El Mac – “Portrait of a Dying Cockroach” @ Carhartt Gallery

A cockroach is a rather unusual subject for a painting when compared to El Mac’s usual repertoire although he has a pretty good story behind it. The LA-based spray paint savant decided to make it the centerpiece of his installation for the Public Provocations show at the Carhartt Gallery that ran parallel to most recent Art Basel fair in Switzerland. The large painting must have been an eye-opener to attendees as he was told there are no cockroaches in Switzerland. More photos after the jump…

Video: RETNA & El Mac – “Let the Arts Roam”

RETNA (featured), who we last saw in London on his Hallelujah World Tour and El Mac, who we last saw getting up with Augustine Kofie are two frequent collaborators who recently were featured in a video portrait – Let the Arts Roam as part of the I Am Los Angeles series. Included in the footage are various murals they have worked on as well as a discussion with both artists on their philosophy behind the content of their murals, public art in poor neighborhoods, and […]
