Last night at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Sanrio opened the doors to a tremendous 50th Anniversary celebration featuring carnival games, costumed characters, special food booths, limited edition event products from the company, and of course – a themed art group show (curated by JAPAN LA). Taking a cue from their Hello Kitty 35th birthday celebration last year (covered), the Japanese company chose a venue that could better accommodate the fanaticism that some have come associate with the brand’s ubiquitous kawaii characters. Although we [...]

Openings: “Love Conquers All” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last Saturday night, AM stopped by the “Love Conquers All” show in Culver City at the Thinkspace Gallery. The exhibition’s concept was based on the struggle of the gay community for equality with part of the proceeds were donated to Equality California. Things don’t always turn out well for themed group shows, but this time, many of the artists were able to maintain their signature imagery yet at the same time subtly produce relevant works. More images from the opening after the jump…

Preview: The Drawing Room @ Thinkspace

Just like how the bridesmaids aren’t suppose to be more beautiful than the bride at a wedding, Audrey Kawasaki appears to be making sure she’s not going to be upstaged at at her own drawing show. Curated by Audrey, “The Drawing Room” (teased) opens this Friday, November 7th at Thinkspace Gallery. She’s submitting around a dozen works on both paper and wood including this amazing die-cut piece seen above. To our knowledge, this is the first time she has used this technique. Judging from the [...]
