Openings: Hennessy Youngman – “Itsa Small, Small World” @ Family Business Gallery

What up INTERNET!? Last week your boy… Hennessy Youngman presented a fresh show at Maurizio Cattelan’s Family Business Gallery. Initially invited by Marilyn Minter for an exhibition, Youngman decided to open up this opportunity to all the local artists to submit their artwork. The show entitled Itsa small, small world ended up being maxed out the first day with submitted artwork. For the opening night celebration, the web persona was in full effect, staying true to his hilarious Art Thoughts (our favorites here & here) [...]

Openings: Marilyn Minter @ Salon 94

A couple weeks ago, AM stopped by Salon 94 to take in Marilyn Minter’s new body of work. The exhibition, her third at the New York gallery and two years in the making, continues to see a refinement her technique of putting a glass plate between the camera and her subject when she shoots. The centerpiece of the show is Mercury, a huge blowup of a baby splashing through silver paint which is further explored in a new video, Play Pen, shown on the first [...]

AM recently attended the star studded charity art show Made In Polaroid held at Phillips de Pury. The benefit was a one night auction that featured 50 works created by the 50-50-50 project using Polaroid’s mobile printer. All proceeds went to support Free Arts NYC. Numerous notable artists including Marilyn Minter, Jean Pigozzi, Will Cotton, Patrick Demarchelier, Phillip-Lorca Dicorica, Steven Klein, Matthew Rolston, Paulo Roversi, Lady Gaga, James Franco, Maripol, Nate Lowman, Chris Anthony, Estevan Oriol, Gary Baseman, Tyra Banks, EINE, Stella IM Hultberg, Krista Huot, Nick [...]

Openings: Marilyn Minter – “Paintings from the 80s” @ Team Gallery

AM recently attended the opening of Marilyn Minter’s latest show Paintings from the 80′s at New York’s Team Gallery. As the title suggests, this body of work is actually a retro showcase of paintings from earlier in her illustrious career. Unlike the stunning series of photographs or photorealistic paintings that most have experienced recently, Minter uses her painterly skills to explore her versions of raw pornographic snapshots paired in contrast with some imagery feature coming of age innocence. More NSFW pics after the jump.

Preview: Marilyn Minter – “Paintings from the 80s” @ Team Gallery

About 30 years before her inclusion in the 2006 Whitney Biennial and the appearance of her work on billboards in Chelsea, Marilyn Minter was already exploring issues of sexuality, glamor, fashion, the body, and commodification.   See the genesis of what has progressed to become her signature bold, hyper-realistic close-ups of glamorous and sexy lips, tongues, and other body parts at her show opening March 31 at Team Gallery.  Paintings from the 80s includes pieces created earlier in the artist’s career (in the 1980s surprisingly) [...]

Merry Christmas from Marilyn Minter

Marilyn Minter, who we just saw at the opening of the Youtube Biennial at the Guggenheim where she was a judge, recently released a 58 x 48 inch vinyl diecut Christmas tree wall-sticker.  The Merry Merry Tree kit features some of Minter’s own eclectic collection of shiny ornaments with the topping star using some of her more classic photo-imagery (seen in detail after the jump). The tree and star are priced at $125 or only the star for $10 all available here with some of [...]

Video: “Destricted” Trailer

The controversial collection of shorts entitled Destricted was recently released onto DVD. The US version which features famed artists like Richard Prince and Marilyn Minter as directors consists of an ongoing series of films that explore the line where art and pornography intersect. When the UK version was released in 2006, it won awards at a range of international film festivals including Cannes, but encountered some problems predictably getting released in the States until now. Openings: Frieze Art Fair 2010 – Part II

We saw a lot at Frieze and we have to note that every fair we’ve been to Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin never fails to make in impact with their bold exhibits. Amongst the bustle we caught impressive works by Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Aya Takano, Tracy Emin, David La Chapelle and even a surprise appearance by Faile.

Openings: Frieze Art Fair 2010 – Part I

Like Basel week for Switzerland and Armory week for New York, London has a signature week for art and it’s centralized around the Frieze Art Fair. This year, AM made the trip out to catch the well produced affair which was overwhelming in the amount of art displayed. Like most major art fairs, we needed to go back after day one to soak in more visual goodness. On our first pass, we stumbled on some notable works from George Condo, fresh photos from Ryan McGinley and a new direction from [...]

Openings: Youtube Play – “Biennial of Creative Video” @ Guggenheim Museum NYC

Last night, AM attended the opening celebration of the Youtube Play: a Biennial of Creative Video at the  Guggenheim Museum in New York. As previewed, the 23,000 videos were filtered down to “the Shortlist“ of 125 that were then whittled down to the final 25 winners. The museum was packed with patrons and art fans attending the inaugural ceremonies. Those in attendance were treated to an on-going light show that transformed the very architecture of the spiraling Guggenheim museum into a giant visual canvas. It seemed [...]
