This Sunday, POW! WOW! Hawaii (more info here) kicks off with a re-occurring show curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum of Art School entitled Exploring The New Contemporary Movement (see 2016 & 2015 & 2014). As in the past, the format is 12 x 12″ works, leading to a visually congruent display of artworks, some of which were inspired by island life. POW! WOW! Hawaii will be making its return for 2017 with a new roster of artists (international and local) as well as fresh new programming and art shows. Following up a successful inaugural event (covered) last year in Tokyo, POW! WOW! Japan is back with the 2016 (October 17-22) edition in a new location. Hitting the streets of Kobe (on Rokko Island) will be a roster of artists including Persue, Push, Sam Rodriguez, Cinta Vidal, John “Prime” Hina, Kami and Sasu of Hitotzuki, Ryuichi Ogino, Jun Inoue and Kensuke Takahashi. A couple weeks ago, POW! WOW! Worcester welcomed in artists from 8 different countries as well as locally from Massachusetts. In association with the event, there were gallery shows and other activities, but the main draw was the live painting (like in other POW! WOW! events around the world). The second edition of POW! WOW! Long Beach is underway with artists painting in the streets as well as inside the Long Beach Museum of Art for the upcoming Vitality & Verve: In The Third Dimension show (covered). Earlier this month, the POW! WOW! crew spent a second year (see 2015) at SXSW painting murals for festival goers to enjoy. The roster this year included artists like Esao Andrews, Fafi, Jasper Wong, Jeffrey Gress, Kamea Hadar and Madsteez as well as local muralists like Dave Lowell, Eleanor “Niz” Herasimchuk, Jason Eatherly (seen above), Scott Tarbox, and Wade “Fish” Thompson, See some of what they painted below… Photo credit: Jasper Wong.
After a look (here & here) at most of the murals painted for this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii, we now focus in on some of the work for the event that you may have missed. Created on a miniature level by Slinkachu, the tiny sculptures were scattered and hidden in plain site around Oahu, including underneath some of the muralists, leading to some interesting collaborations.
