Basel Week Miami ’11: NADA Fair

AM stopped by the NADA yesterday which was held at the Deauville Beach Resort in Miami. This particular art fair’s mission is to showcase young and upcoming galleries and artists in the contemporary art scene and was held in three separate sections. Yesterday, AM stopped by PULSE, one of the satellite fairs of Art Basel Week Miami, and we were greeted by a pretty solid selection of art work from various artists and their galleries (after the fixed a lighting issue). Basel Week Miami ’11: Art Basel – First Look (Part II)

With so much eye candy at the main fair, we had to split out photos into two helpings. Headlining this second set are these clusters from Bay Area legend Barry McGee at the Cheim & Read booth featuring some abstract representations of spray cans arranged in a new way with some novel patterns. Other strong pieces seen were a unique piece from Mark Ryden utilizing a new technique, an oil from Lisa Yuskavage, various shiny objects from Anish Kapoor, and much more. See it all […]

Update: Scott Musgrove – “Walktopus” Bronze

We’ve featured some of Scott Musgrove’s (featured) bronze sculptures before in the past here on AM, but this newest one may be our favorite. Walktopus stands five feet tall and will feature working candle lanterns when finished. Next up is to get this clay sculpt molded and cast in bronze by the good people at Metalphysic in Tucson. Art Focus: Patrick Jacobs

Next up in our series highlighting artists previously unfeatured here on AM is Patrick Jacobs. The Brooklyn-based artist and sculptor creates these amazing dioramas placed behind glass portals which are like looking into another world. The viewer is instantly transported into an altered reality all due to the incredible amount of detail produced and time-intensive process which can take from weeks to months for each piece. Openings: Ron English – “Seasons in Supurbia” @ Corey Helford

Over the weekend, the Corey Helford Gallery debuted a new collection of work from artist and visual satirist Ron English (featured). Titled Seasons in Superbia, the show featured the NY-based artist’s ironic take on everything ranging from Peanuts characters to other pop culture icons from the comic book world, film, and animation. AM recently visited Taiwan to catch Ai Weiwei’s absent exhibition at the TFAM (Taipei Fine Arts Museum). As the show’s title implies, Ai Weiwei was not present for the opening as he’s still working on clearing his previous “issues” with his home country’s government. This museum show of the controversial Chinese artist is practically a retrospective ,with spanning works from 1983-present, giving the people of Taiwan a taste of the talent and unique point of view that Ai brings to the table. This neat little project from Geoff McFetridge, whose work we last ogled at in his solo show in Copenhagen, was brought to our attention recently. The LA-based artist just opened an exhibition at the renowned Heath Ceramics in Los Angeles featuring his paintings on the walls and some special ceramic products, many of which are one of a kind. Openings: Thomas Doyle – “Surface to Air” @ LeBasse Projects

Over the weekend, Lebasse Projects unveiled the new solo exhibition, Surface to Air, by artist Thomas Doyle. The artwork included a variety of photographs and sculptural work which touched upon the themes of destruction in suburbian landscapes. One half of the exhibit featured an incredible collection of miniatures that were created with an insane amount of detail and craftsmanship. Although the pieces were small in size, it demanded the viewer to truly pay close attention to the intricacies and settings which Doyle attempted to recreate. […]
