Showing: “Die Like You Really Mean It” @ Allegra LaViola

Now showing at the Allegra LaViola Gallery on Manhattan’s lower east side is a dynamic group show entitled Die Like You Really Mean It. The exhibition, curated by painters Paul Brainard and Frank Webster, assembles a wide range of more than 20 contemporary artists in the New York City area, including Eric White, Eddie Martinez and Kristen Schiele. Painting is clearly the focus – nearly all of the works are of the medium, but also the diversity of styles and themes of painting suggests that […]

Openings: Travis Louie – “Curious Pets” @ Merry Karnowsky

Just over the weekend, the Merry Karnowsky in Los Angeles unveiled a series of portraits from Travis Louie (interviewed) painted in his signature style and amazing detail to reproduce the look of vintage B&W photographs. Continuing to expand his narrative of pets and their owners, Curious Pets featured unlikely pairings and imaginative creatures all with their own backstories written out by the NY-based artist. Openings: Simen Johan @ Yossi Milo

Opening last Thursday at Yossi Milo was the latest show by talented NY-based Scandinavian photographer, Simen Johan. Johan has developed a unique method in which he photographs animals and plants in nature preserves and then uses sculptural and digital techniques to seamlessly incorporate them into environments of his creation. This exhibition continues with his series entitled Until the Kingdom Comes, which was shown at the gallery in 2010, as well as in the Frist Center for Visual Arts in Nashville, the 21c Museum in Louisville […]

Preview: Thomas Doyle – “Surface to Air” @ LeBasse Projects

On a busy art weekend in Los Angeles, another show to visit on Saturday night, November 12th, is Thomas Doyle’s solo at LeBasse Projects. The NY-based artist will be filling the Culver City showspace with a continuation of his Distillation series, an uncanny intersection of destruction and domestic life in the form of his model-like sculptural work. Surface to Air will also feature the debut of Doyle’s new Foregone series, consisting of photographic portraits of the child figures that feature prominently in his three-dimensional work. […]

Openings: Tom Sachs – “WORKS” @ Sperone Westwater

Last week, AM stopped by the architectural tour de force and New York showspace Sperone Westwater to take in the new solo from Tom Sachs. The painter and sculptor created a vast body of work influenced by a disparate range of historic objects and cultural icons which were recreated and remixed in his signature blend of whimsy and mastery of materials. Included in the exhibition was this reproduction of the award-winning gallery (seen above), rendered in meticulous detail. More openings photos after the jump…

Preview: Tom Sachs – “WORK” @ Sperone Westwater

Tonight, November 4th, the Sperone Westwater Gallery, whose showspace was named the Best New Building in NYC recently, will be hosting a new body of work from Tom Sachs. Drawing from a diverse set of inspirations including “historic objects and cultural iconography – Sèvres porcelain, traditional African symbols, Pop, NASA, and the singer and songwriter James Brown – the hardest working man in show business,” the NY-based artist continues to explore his obsession with the the ritual act of work itself (well documented in these […]

FIAC Coverage

Following the Frieze week in London (covered here), AM headed off to Paris to visit the FIAC, the Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain in Paris at the Grand Palais, host to 168 galleries. While Frieze focuses exclusively on contemporary art, the FIAC also combines early 20th century modern art with the contemporary. Of interest, Karl Lagerfeld designed the booth of Zurich’s Gallery Gmurzynska for the Rebels curated by Isabelle Bscher and featuring Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein, Andy Warhol as well as Banksy and Scott Campbell. […]

Openings: AJ Fosik – “Time Kills All Gods” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Opening along side Josh Keyes at Jonathan Levine was sculptural artist AJ Fosik. The show entitled Time Kills All Gods is a tour de force as AJ brings the hammer with this latest endeavor. We’ve long been impressed at his creative wood and metal workings that depict unique animals, but this time he ups the ante with a serious boost of imaginative mythical creatures while tackling the ideas of religion and the worship of false idols.
