Installation: Mike Shine @ SFMoMA

Following our studio visit with Mike Shine last week (here), AM headed down to San Francisco to check out the fruits of his recent labors for SFMoMA‘s 75th Anniversary. Much as flotsam will accumulate in the ocean, creating a massive and no longer disjointed whole, the Mike Shine Show was part Fastelavn carnival, part three penny opera and part interactive installation. With carnival games and creepy clowns, Shine’s latest experience successfully brought back the fun and wonder of art to both parents and children alike, […]

Installation: Barry McGee @ SFMoMA – A Closer Look

After visiting Mike Shine’s outdoor carnival for SFMoMA‘s 75th Anniversary, AM ducked inside to catch one last look at Barry McGee’s massive clustered installation (previewed).  Consisting of hundreds of drawings, personal pictures and patented patterns, McGee’s exhibit truly conveyed the multi-faceted breadth of his works.  Arranged in a seemingly haphazard, though obviously well thought out manner, Twist’s install was literally bulging at the seams, seemingly so that one would assume it was on the cusp of giving birth or expelling a whole new body of […]

Installation: Barry McGee @ SFMOMA 75th Anniversary Exhibiton

We recently took you to Mike Shine’s studio where he was getting ready for this weekend’s show at SFMOMA, but he’s not the only artist who was working on an exhibition there. Barry McGee was also installing some works in preparation for the 75th anniversary show at SFMOMA, where they have championed Mission School artists like Mr. Twist over the years.  Other artists featured include Bruce Conner, Jay DeFeo, Frida Kahlo, Jeff Koons, Sherrie Levine, Mike Mandel, Larry Sultan, Jackson Pollock, Leslie Shows and more. Studio Visits: Mike Shine

AM had the honor this past weekend of visiting Mike Shine‘s historic “surf shack” as the artist was preparing for his latest installation, opening today at SFMoMA. Nestled away in the heart of Bolinas, Mike Shine has created for himself the ideal Nordic retreat, the perfect getaway for him and his family of artists. Purchased six years ago, the surf shack has become an institution in and of itself. With recreations built for the Museum of Craft and Folk Art, Mollusk Surf Shop, White Walls, […]
