Streets: Futura (New York)

It’s nice to see street legend Futura active in New York again. The last time we saw him hit up his home city, he was creating an epic collaboration piece with Os Gemeos at a Chelsea public school (P.S. 11). This time, he’s working in his spirographic abstractions on this wall in Brooklyn adjacent to work from his friends Stash and Wane. More photos after the jump…

When we heard about an exhibition that was to be curated by Elms Lester at the prestigious Atkinson Gallery in Somerset, it definitely stoked our interest. Openings: Ron English – “Nimbus Vapor” @ Opera Gallery

Ron English has been a busy man since his show at Elm’s Lester (studio visit and opening). Last month, he “tagged” the skyline of NYC with clouds (here) in preparation for his curated show “Nimbus Vapor” at Opera Gallery (previewed). Last week AM attended the opening of Ron’s curated take on the most important street artists of our time consisting of a hall of fame lineup consisting of names such as Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Banksy, Blek Le Rat, Daze, Crash, Shepard Fairey (featured), Faile, Futura, Logan [...]

Openings: Mark Dean Veca – “As Cold As They Come” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Continuing with our coverage of Jonathan LeVine Gallery’s massive kick off of the new art season, AM brings you Mark Dean Veca’s “As Cold As They Come.” This psychedelic body of work continues where his last show “Paintings, Wall Drawings, and Collaborations” left off (covered/interviewed). At the center is “Popeyeconography,” which is a series based on the classic Popeye cartoon. It was great to see Brutus, Olive Oyl, Wimpy and Swee’ Pea redone under Mark’s surreal biomorphic style. He even had time to sneak in [...]

Openings: “Celeritas” @ SURU

The motorcycle culture themed “Celeritas” show (previewed) and silent auction held last weekend at SURU in Los Angeles was a huge success, raising $66,000 for Riders for Health, a non-profit that funds the transportation of medical personnel to remote communities in Africa. The centerpiece of the show was a 2009 Suzuki Hayabusa customized by Barry McGee coupled with a mannequin draped in styling Darren Romanelli fashioned motorcycle leathers. Accompanying this were a series of custom helmets from Alex Pardee, Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed), Estevan Oriol, Futura, James Jean (interviewed), Joe Hahn, [...]

Tomokazu Matsuyama named Top Ten of Art Dubai

It seems like Matsu’s a thoroughbred that keeps outpacing the competition. Keeping the momentum from his stunning solo at Joshua Liner Gallery (covered); Tomokazu (Matsu) Matsuyama’s “Runnin II” was named one of the top ten pieces in this this year’s Art Dubai by Emirates Business. The piece was represented by Frey Norris, where he sold out his previous show (covered).  Matsu’s beautiful work was recognized as one of the gems of this year’s monster show in the ever growing UAB. And despite the gloomy perceptions about the overall world economy, it appears [...]
