Last night KAWS had a very special opening reception to kickoff his new exhibition at Gering & López Gallery in New York. This marks his highly anticipated return to the New York fine art scene. AM friend: Wendy from Nitrolicious was invited by Edison Chen to join the opening night festivities which included celebrities and industry notables such as: Haze, Edison Chen, Dr. Romanelli, Peter Wentz (Fall Out Boy) and Leo (Union). The works varied in medium and size including Acrylic on canvas, Fiberglass sculpture, and of course, the much discussed 33 bronzed heads we previewed earlier.

Its apparent that Kaws is not abandoning his classic style; he’s mixing it up by blending some of the old and the new. The Sponge Bob portraits from the Emmanuel Perrotin show returned but not without some black monotone remixes (a style he popularized earlier in his career). There was also an awesome giant seven foot fiberglass Chum sculpture. Kaws also had some abstract paintings which included pieces of Sponge Bob and his famous famous “companion”.  Overall this exhibition was a brilliant showing for the street artist’s return to NYC.
The show officially opens tonight (11/6) and runs through December 23rd at Gering & Lopez. This is another one of the “don’t-miss” shows of the year!
