Basel Week Miami ’10 – Paula Cooper Gallery

Two stars of the last auction season – Rudolph Stingel and Kelley Walker, who both had auction records set, were featured up close and personal at Paula Cooper’s booth during Art Basel Miami Beach.  The gallery’s stacked roster of artists provided them with fantastic pieces by the aforementioned duo and also Carl Andre and Wayne Gonzales (pictured above).  The diversity of their program was on display as you can see after the jump…

Streets: Judith Supine (Los Angeles)

It looks like Judith Supine was recently in Los Angeles for a visit. While in town, he took time to throw up several of his signature “green skinned” collaged pieces including one that was put in New Image Art’s show (covered) in Miami for Art Basel Week. Thankfully, his buddy Skullphone had time to shoot some pics before the rains started. More after the jump…

Openings: Josh Agle (SHAG) – “Ambergris” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Last Saturday night, the Jonathan LeVine Gallery hosted the opening of SHAG’s (interviewed) newest body of work “Ambergris” (previewed). As indicated by the obscure title, the new collection of paintings are centered on a nautical, and more specifically, a whaling theme, all while maintaining his mid-century aesthetic. Happily, the artist was able to to make it to the opening despite an unfortunate accident that left him injured. Take a look at all the opening pics after the jump…

Openings: Mike Giant & Adam 5100 @ Guerrero Gallery

Last Saturday, Guererro Gallery hosted the opening for an exhibition featuring two artists who are truly masters at their craft: Mike Giant and Adam 5100 (previewed). Both artists displayed work not typically found in their previous exhibitions, which gave the show a more personal feel. Mike Giant (who was occasionally spotted riding around outside the gallery on his bicycle) displayed his usual crisp Sharpie work on paper, as well as works on canvas done with One Shot enamel, intricate tracings on paper, and collages featuring […]

Releases/Highlights: Tauba Auerbach “[2,3]” Pop-Up Book & MOVE! Performance

A little over a month ago at the NY Book Fair, organized by the largest non-profit dedicated to publications made by artists Printed Matter, Tauba Auerbach unveiled the beginnings of an intriguing and gravity defying pop-up book. On the heels of her powerful solo exhibition, The W Axis (covered), as well as a blowout result at a recent charity auction where one of her much sought after Fold paintings reportedly sold for nearly 10x the estimate, the scalding hot contemporary artist has condensed her methodical […]

Sharing the stage with the street art at Art Basel Week Miami were the graffiti artists although the lines between the two are sometimes blurred. With events like Graffiti Gone Global, crews from all over the country could be seen working on throwups, tags, and large complex pieces putting their handstyles and techniques on full display. Check out a selection of photos after the jump, but for a lot more, go to Focused On Graff’s photostream…

Preview: Robert Hardgrave – “Relic” @ David B. Smith Gallery

Robert Hardgrave is set to reveal the newest chapter of his experimental work in free-form abstraction this Friday, December 17th at the David B. Smith Gallery. Gaining traction over the years with his organic and psychedelic compositions, the Seattle based artist appears to have tapped into whole new realm of expression with his newest body of work, Relic. While still incorporating some of his more conventional richly rendered acrylic paintings, the exhibition also takes the viewer in a new direction, showcasing a series of “sculptural” […]

Releases: “Murakami Versailles” Book

Much like Jeff Koons, who in 2008 was the first artist granted the honor of  exhibiting in the royal French chateau, a book is set to release chronicling Takashi Murakami’s recent efforts to reinvent the home decor of the historic Palace of Versailles (covered). Ranking as the 39th most powerful art figure by Art Review, the Japanese pop art sensation had an impressive year, continuing his partnership Louis Vuitton, exhibiting with Gagosian in Rome, participating in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and even “collaborating” with […]

Basel Week Miami ’10: Shepard Fairey – “Mandala Ornament”

Art Basel Week in Miami may have a lot of action indoors at the fairs, but that’s not the only place you will find the arts. As you can see with Wynwood Walls and along the streets of Miami, in recent years we have seen artists make contributions on the outdoors too. We took a break from the fair circuit during the week to meet up with friend Shepard Fairey to catch him working on this gorgeous Mandala Ornament mural on the side of a […]

More opening photos after the jump…
