Openings: Scott Campbell – “Noblesse Oblige” @ OHWOW (LA)

Last Saturday saw the grand opening of OHWOW Gallery’s Los Angeles location. Batting in the lead-off exhibition spot was New York’s tattoo rooted artist Scott Campbell with his latest body of work entitled Noblesse Oblige (previewed). The name of the show implies that “whoever claims to be noble must conduct their life accordingly and in a manner that conforms to one’s position.” In other words, keep it real. Certainly something that Campbell has lived by as shown by a recent torching of his show in Mexico, of which some […]

Blek Le Rat x Hugo – Berlin Stencil Contest

It’s always cool to see companies give back and sponsor the arts. This time, Hugo Create collaborated with Blek Le Rat to put together a contest for the artist in you. Your homework assignment is to create a work of stencil art based on the inspiration brought on by the city of Berlin. What’s in it for you? Well, Hugo is going to select 5 winners to receive flights and accommodations to Berlin. The winners will be attending a little creative jam session with Blek, […]

Openings: Lamar Peterson @ Fredericks & Freiser

On Thursday, we attended the opening of the new show by Lamar Peterson at Chelsea’s Fredericks & Freiser. Peterson’s talent lies in his ability to immediately draw in viewers, using bright colors, smiling faces and trompe l’oeil elementary-school style borders to create work that at first glance seems easy and accessible. But upon longer inspection, the images betray a dark, off-kilter world where everything is facade and nothing is the way it seems on the surface. Take a look at all the images for the […]

Studio Visit: Polly Morgan

AM recently had the opportunity to go visit Polly Morgan in her East London studio. We anticipated what we might see. Tales of Polly’s ‘chamber of horrors’ from friends who had visited previously sounded intriguing and exciting, and this promised to be a very different studio visit experience for us. Polly is a member of the Guild of Taxidermists, and has been working as an artist since 2005, since which she has shown work via Banksy at the ’05 Santa’s Ghetto, at the currently hibernating […]

Charity / Releases: Josh Keyes “Evacuation” Print

With his next exhibition, The Magician’s Garden (teased), right around the corner, Josh Keyes (interviewed) has taken some time out to once again teamed up with Tiny Showcase for their fifth collaborative effort to raise funds in the name of charity. With $10 from the sale of every print being donated to Doctors Without Boarders, and with over $28,000! being raised for Stand With Haiti through the sale of the “Totem II” print last winter, the two partners are sure to help this year’s cause […]

Studio Visit / Preview: LUDO – “La Belle Vie” @ Starkart Gallery (Zurich)

Since his last public art intervention earlier this year (covered), Paris-based street artist, LUDO (interviewed), has been working tirelessly within the indoor confines of his studio, preparing for his first full fledged solo exhibition. Opening Thursday, April 7th, La Belle Vie will be an ambitious undertaking for the French talent, as he fills the 15 rooms of Zurich’s Starkart Gallery with his weapon clad insects and other nature based imagery fused with technological components, often with sociopolitical slants. Consisting of approximately 18 graphite and oil […]

Streets: Phlegm in Sheffield

Whilst visiting Sheffield at the weekend, AM came across this new city centre piece from Phlegm. This cool sequential piece looks like it could have jumped straight out of the pages of the latest issue of his comic; and was painted over an older style colour Phlegm piece – the evidence of which can be seen seeping through the red background and also still partly intact top left of the shot. It seems that Phlegm is working his way across town painting over some of […]

Openings: “Too Fast To Live, Too Young To Die” @ Subliminal Projects

When AM recently visited Shepard Fairey at his studio in Los Angeles, he also took us on a private tour of Subliminal Project’s latest exhibition Too Fast To Live, Too Young to Die. The group show curated by Katherine B. Cone and Jon Cournoyer is a selection of photography, art and ephemera from the California punk and hardcore scene emphasizing the explosive period of the late 70’s to early 80’s. Artists included Raymond Pettibon, Shepard Fairey, Glen E. Friedman, Jenny Lens, Dave Markey, Jordan Schwartz […]

Volta ’11 – Richard Colman @ V1 Gallery

Another great artist to be featured at this year’s VOLTA fair’s solo format was Richard Colman (interviewed). Represented at Copenhagen’s V1 Gallery booth, the San Francisco based artist impressed us with a diverse selection of his signature colorful and geometric works. Check it out after the jump.

Showing: Camille Rose Garcia – “Snow White and the Black Lagoon” @ Michael Kohn Gallery

Camille Rose Garcia took aim at another fairytale a couple weekends ago at Michael Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles with a new body of work based on Snow White, but instead of the seven dwarfs, she brought the whole story into the black lagoon. Like her Alice in Wonderland themed show last year, Camille blended imagery that was consistent in both her repertoire and the well-known tale like apples, poisons, and strange creatures culminating in a fantastic series of new paintings and drawings. More photos […]
