Openings: Scott Campbell – “Noblesse Oblige” @ OHWOW (LA)

Last Saturday saw the grand opening of OHWOW Gallery’s Los Angeles location. Batting in the lead-off exhibition spot was New York’s tattoo rooted artist Scott Campbell with his latest body of work entitled Noblesse Oblige (previewed). The name of the show implies that “whoever claims to be noble must conduct their life accordingly and in a manner that conforms to one’s position.” In other words, keep it real. On Thursday, we attended the opening of the new show by Lamar Peterson at Chelsea’s Fredericks & Freiser. Peterson’s talent lies in his ability to immediately draw in viewers, using bright colors, smiling faces and trompe l’oeil elementary-school style borders to create work that at first glance seems easy and accessible. Studio Visit: Polly Morgan

AM recently had the opportunity to go visit Polly Morgan in her East London studio. We anticipated what we might see. Tales of Polly’s ‘chamber of horrors’ from friends who had visited previously sounded intriguing and exciting, and this promised to be a very different studio visit experience for us. With his next exhibition, The Magician’s Garden (teased), right around the corner, Josh Keyes (interviewed) has taken some time out to once again teamed up with Tiny Showcase for their fifth collaborative effort to raise funds in the name of charity. Since his last public art intervention earlier this year (covered), Paris-based street artist, LUDO (interviewed), has been working tirelessly within the indoor confines of his studio, preparing for his first full fledged solo exhibition. This cool sequential piece looks like it could have jumped straight out of the pages of the latest issue of his comic; and was painted over an older style colour Phlegm piece – the evidence of which can be seen seeping through the red background and also still partly intact top left of the shot. When AM recently visited Shepard Fairey at his studio in Los Angeles, he also took us on a private tour of Subliminal Project’s latest exhibition Too Fast To Live, Too Young to Die. Camille Rose Garcia took aim at another fairytale a couple weekends ago at Michael Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles with a new body of work based on Snow White, but instead of the seven dwarfs, she brought the whole story into the black lagoon. Like her Alice in Wonderland themed show last year, Camille blended imagery that was consistent in both her repertoire and the well-known tale like apples, poisons, and strange creatures culminating in a fantastic series of new paintings and drawings.
