D*Face is currently putting the final touches to a whole new body of work for his US West Coast debut solo show Going Nowhere Fast opening on April 9th at Corey Helford Gallery’s Culver City spot. AM has been anticipating what Face would come up with for this show, as he always turns up the heat for solo exhibitions and brings in new themes. We went along to his studio recently to see how the work was coming together and grabbed a few shots of work in progress.
His recent print release No More Heroes does indeed seem to herald the end of the fucked-up superhero (for now?), and a new path of exploration along the route of pop art and iconography. Large Lichtenstein inspired canvases are set to form a part of the exhibit, along with a foray into entomology with a brilliantly executed series of bugs and butterflies or Flutter-dies seeing the insects intersected with skulls and spray-tip heads & bodies. The work for the exhibition seems to take on a macabre theme, with the deaths of popular American celebrities and icons such as Andy Warhol and Michael Jackson being a common thread thoughout the works over varying media.
Expect some dynamic installation elements, sculptural works and multi-media pieces plus some of the exquisite corpse styled cut up books as debuted at StolenSpace’s recent Never Judge exhibition. Sounds like some street level interventions are planned for LA also, so keep your eyes peeled! Read on for more pictures after the jump.
