Logan Hicks (interviewed) debuted his latest show Pretty Ugly (previewed) last week at the Opera Gallery in New York. The new body of work was created over the past six months and featured some of his largest indoor pieces to date. While there, we noticed that Logan was working with various compositions and subjects that normally isn’t seen in his work. The first UK solo show by LA-based Sage Vaughn (referred to in early May) opened a few weeks back at Lazarides Gallery in London with a title ostensibly borrowed from the 1980 play by Mark Medoff or its subsequent film adaptation. Showing at the La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles, Glenn Barr debuted his book, Faces, along with a multitude of new paintings that focus on the human expression. This new work clearly displays Barr’s background in animation, but it also features influences that range from late 1960s television to fantasy and science fiction motifs. Art HK ’11: “HONG KONG Terry Richardson” @ Diesel

During the recent Art HK ’11, controversial photographer extraordinaire Terry Richardson presented a body of Asian themed work, aptly dubbed HONG KONG Terry Richardson, with clothing company Diesel. The selection of toned down, while still edgy portraits centered around celebrities native to the city of Hong Kong. A book by the same name, produced in conjunction with Ooi Botos and limited to 1000 copies, offers up Richardson’s entire catalog of photographs taken in Hong Kong during his travels there. Exhibiting alongside Mars-1 (covered) and Miss Van (covered), Gaia took full advantage of the opportunity to show on his largest stage to date by transforming the Project Room at Jonathan Levine Gallery into dynamic visual feast. We haven’t seen an exhibition in person from Nathan Spoor in a while (although we did enjoy his curation of the Suggestivism show), so we headed over to the Bold Hype Gallery in New York a couple weeks ago to check out his new body of work – Phantom Passport. Preview: Culver City Artwalk 2011

We’re sure many of our readers will be strolling the annual Culver City Artwalk today (2-8pm) visiting their favorite galleries and related events. Here are some suggestions for those heading out starting with some group shows at Thinkspace and LeBasse Projects and ending with some that are currently showing – Zhang Huan at Blum & Poe and Flight & Fable at Corey Helford. Gary Baseman’s (featured) ChouChous and Wildgirls (above) will also be out there entertaining the crowds with their art performance Giggle and Pop.
