Streets: Jeff Soto (France)

Jeff Soto (interviewed) is currently in Lyon, France prepping for the  Les Enfants TERRIBLES satellite exhibition during Lyon Biennale week. While there, he is continuing to exercise his renewed love for mural work with this feline piece in a nearby park, which was inspired by a local chat (cat) that was hanging out as well as something for the local kids. More photos after the jump as well as a video preview of the group exhibition…

Over the weekend, New Yorker’s received a new mural to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, courtesy of WK Interact. Project Brave is a huge 328 foot wall piece located on Kent Avenue (between North 4th & North 5th Streets) that paid tribute to the firefighters and memorialized the tragedy through the kinetic imagery of the NY-based street artist and will be on display until October 11th. Escif recently made the stop in Grottaglie for some last minute additions as the Fame Festival opening will roll around in the next couple weeks (see other artists who have already have done their part here). In addition to this giant tiger, the Spanish street artist also worked on some walls with his signature characters as well as a text-based piece. More after the jump…

Openings: LUDO – “Metamorphosis” @ High Roller Society

Opening his first solo exhibition in London over the weekend, LUDO (interviewed) yet again showed his artistic dexterity in multiple mediums at High Roller Society. Much like his Zurich solo back in April, Metamorphosis (previewed) offered an strong selection of large graphite and oil drawings, focusing on his signature weaponized insects. Preferring to work on paper, these large scale works illustrate the French artist’s deft drawing abilities and provide reference to the massive paper wheatpastes he utilizes for his street work. The focal point of the […]

Teaser: Matthew Palladino @ Texas Contemporary Art Fair

With a successful NYC exhibition back in June that saw strong institutional interest, the ever-dynamic Matthew Palladino (interviewed) looks to continue exploiting his near never-ending supply of creative juices with his most recent painting. Destined for the Texas Contemporary Art Fair, the hypnotic painting executed in his color rich, isometric perspective (or “fake” perspective, as Matthew originally self-ascribed), producing that uniquely flat, two dimensional aesthetic of a three-dimensional environment, will be on display at the Eli Ridgway booth (formerly Baer Ridgway, with co-owner Kent Baer […]

Openings: Chris Johanson – “Alright Alright” @ Malmö Konsthall

This past weekend, Chris Johanson opened his massive retrospective at Malmö Konsthall in Sweden. Organized by Galleri Nicolai Wallner, Alright Alright (previewed) presents an extensive collection of large scale paintings, smaller works on paper, and mixed-media sculptures from the Portland-based artist, collectively exploring such existential issues as “self-delusion, alienation, deceit, and monotony”. The installation of the work was particular unique, displayed on rustic easels within the open layout of the venue for attendees to weave in and out of and interact with on a more intimate […]

The constant themes in this series are automobiles and classic movies and by applying his unique vision and technique, Eric is able to bring us his version of the magic of Hollywood and […]

Streets: Mentalgassi for Getxo Photo 2011 (Spain)

For this fifth edition of the festival dedicated to photography, GETXOPHOTO, that takes place in Spain, Berlin collective Mentalgassi decided to create four spherical portraits and float them in the sea. Known for creatively wheatpasting over existing urban objects, this time they decided to take control of the entire process to produce these “elderly swimmers.” Take a look at more photos as well as video from Fermin Aio and Aitor Gisasola after the jump…

Streets: Liqen – “Monkey” (Mexico)

Spanish street artist Liqen, who’s skills remind us of a hybrid of the great Italians, Ericailcane and Blu, recently completed this clever new mural in the city San Cristóbal de las Casas in Chiapas, Mexico. Perhaps influenced by the recent prequel Rise of the Planet of the Apes movie, the painter, now based in Mexico, turns the tables on the humans with this wall as a curious primate examines his find. More photos after the jump from Unurth.
