POW WOW ’12: Suitman

For this year’s POW WOW, we see the return of performance artist, Young Kim aka Suitman. The versatile man of many talents continued expanding his longstanding  suit-photography series which he also explored during last year’s Pow Wow. With all the portraits created from the attendees from the opening night a year ago, Suitman pasted up and hand-finished two site specific outdoor murals to be displayed in the neighborhood of Kaka’ako thus giving a “distinguished” face to the event’s name. Check out more after the jump.

Streets: DAL – “The Williams Brothers” (Cape Town)

The South Africa-based DAL recently sent us some photos of his latest mural enititled The Williams Brothers. As you can see, some of his signature lifeforms comprised of abstract weaves of energy are bounding across the side of a building. If you are liking his kinetic work, make sure you check out his solo show next month in Milan at the Urban Painting Gallery. More detailed shots of the wall after the jump…

Streets: ROA (Stockholm)

In contrast to the tropical weather AM is experiencing here in Hawaii for POW WOW, it looks like Stockholm is still experiencing a cold front. As you must know by now after reading our preview article, ROA was in Sweden for a solo show recently (more on this later). While there, the Belgium street muralist braved the snow to put up this seal piece for his fans to enjoy. More photos after the jump…

Video: Anthony Lister @ New Image Art (Teaser)

This upcoming Thursday, February 23rd, Anthony Lister (interviewed) will be showcasing a new body of work during his solo exhibition (previewed) at LA’s New Image Art. Focusing on the central theme of beauty and the twisted form of the ballerina, this collection of paintings will bring to the foreground Lister’s meticulous technique of blending his figurative style with an aura of abstraction. Although the Aussie  street artist has been out on the streets of Los Angeles painting murals (covered), he’s also been hard at work inside his […]

In his first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, kinky shotmaker to the stars Terry Richardson will be presenting at OHWOW a more fine art spin to his impressive commercial photographic oeuvre. Opening Friday, February 24th, TERRYWOOD will serve as a refreshing departure from his concept driven yet more constrictive Mom & Dad and HONG KONG exhibitions last year. This time around, Terry opens his shutter wide, takes aim at his favorite muse – Hollywood – and lets his true, unfiltered colors shine through. Capturing both the […]

Openings: POW WOW ’12 @ Loft In Space

Last night, after a week of painting murals throughout the city (more on this later), the artists of POW WOW got together for an opening party at Loft In Space. The art festival brought many quality street and graffiti artists to the island, the likes of which are not often seen in Hawaii. This fact combined with the inclusion of local talent brought out a huge crowd of art lovers and admirers to the gallery, and the surrounding areas as they walked to various walls around […]
