Preview: Victor Castillo – “The Jungle” @ Jonathan LeVine

Next Saturday, Feb 25th in Chelsea, the disturbing works of Victor Castillo will be on display at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. The Jungle features the Chilean-born and Los Angeles-based artist’s series of paintings influenced by the preponderance of global protests and violence that has taken over the headlines in recent times. When told through the lens of spooky children’s tales and cartoon-like characters, the ideas of corrupted innocence form a striking metaphor for the socio-economic crisis and political turbulence seen around the world. This year’s Pow Wow event aims to expand from its initial urban roots. Last year, the crew laid paint solely on buildings near the gallery property, but this time the surrounding industrial district of Kaka’ako was also the target of this artistic beautification campaign. After the kickoff ceremonies, it was time to get serious and the crew got straight to work. Artists such as Will Barras, Mr. Jago, Prime, Flying Fortress, 123Klan, Meggs, Angry Woebots, Aaron De La Cruz and many more took tours of the neighborhood to […]

Preview / Installation: ROA – “Defragmentation” & “Fragments” @ The Scarlett Gallery

The last time we touched on the work of the prolific Belgium-based ROA was when we came across some of his murals during Art Basel Week Miami (here & here). And, the last time we witnessed an indoor showing from the anatomically-inclined artist was in Australia (covered) back in October. Well, we’re happy to report that he has two concurrent exhibitions planned very soon in Stockholm, one on the 17th at a yet-to-be-announced secret location entitled Defragmentation and another entitled Fragments on the 18th at the […]

In association with LA Taco, Lomography presents Taco de Lomography – a series which puts the Lomo LC-A, equipped with a Fritz the Blitz flash, in the hands of […]

On the heels of Daniel Arsham’s exhibition the fall, the ball, and the wall that opened last month at OHWOW, we thought it worthwhile to bring your attention to an intriguing art project he produced not long ago in collaboration with Alex Mustonen. Previously collaborating together on the experimental installation and performance art exhibition DIG, the three-dimensionally inclined artists partner again here on Cast Light, a series of “lights” consisting of a single long-life LED bulb cast within a solid cubic volume of white gypsum cement […]
