Opening alongside Victor Castillo last month at Jonathan LeVine was Los Angeles-based artist Alex Gross (interviewed). Entitled Product Placement, the show presented a new series of paintings that expands on the themes from his prior work such as Consumption, Branding, Celebrity, Love and Mortality. Using refined strokes and techniques, Gross skillfully rendered mundane objects and mixed them into a world where luxury brands are the common focus of his alluring subjects. It’s also interesting to see the typographic examples of foreign elements in his compositions. We especially enjoyed the unique parlor card paintings where old photos were repainted into comic and sci-fi characters.
