Detroit Beautification Project

A project that was first hinted at here appears to have come to fruition in the Motor City. We have already shared works from Sever and Reyes for the Detroit Beautification Project, but now we have a closer look at the multitude of artists (many of them MSK affiliated) and the murals they painted centered mostly in Hamtramck. After bringing you some preview images several days ago for what is shaping up to be a great exhibition opening this weekend, Wild At Heart, we can now reveal one of the more anticipated pieces in the show. If you remember, we previewed the Ron Mueck exhibition at Hauser & Wirth, London (Saville Row, South Gallery) last month. Those familiar with Mueck’s hyperrealist style and playful distortions of scale will know his work needs to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Video: Mear One – “Snow White and the Huntsman” Mural

To promote the upcoming release of Snow White and the Huntsman, a pop-up gallery has opened in Los Angeles (7710 Melrose Aveneue). Along with costumes from Colleen Atwood, the film’s Oscar-winning designer, fans will also be greeted by a mural from Mear One (interviewed). The unique 12 foot piece featuring a moonlit forest scene is painted entirely on a mirror with some of it drifting onto the surrounding walls. Update: Dalek

Judging from this new ink piece from James Marshal aka Dalek (interviewed), he hasn’t completely killed off his space monkeys yet. Of course, his more abstract work also continues with an update of a mural he painted at the Hobie Surf Shop in Corona Del Mar, a completely new piece really. This Saturday, May 26th, the Carmichael Gallery will be opening a show featuring work from three artists coming from diverse backgrounds. The first is a giant in the Chinese contemporary art scene – Yue Minjun. Working with the original publisher, two of each of the 28 large format lithographs from the Smile-Isms set (edition of 45) will be made available. Charity: Lucy McLauchlan Auction for Sound It Out

Lucy McLauchlan just set up an installation at 48Sheet Gallery in Birmingham to benefit Sound It Out: a charity that strives to bring support and opportunities in music to deprived people in Birmingham and the West Midlands. This is part of the Tambourine Project in which artists and celebrities (which includes Ricky Gervais, Raymond Briggs, Helen Mirren, Stephen Fry, Eric Clapton and Log Roper) were asked to doodle on the instrument and have them auctioned off on Ebay (listings can be seen: here).
