Last Friday evening at FFDG marked the opening of Dave Kinsey’s first solo show in San Francisco in over a decade (previewed). This longtime Los Angeles artist recently moved away from the city, to a much quieter town near the Sequoia National Forrest and has created a body of work that has become more abstract, but still incorporates his recognizable figurative characters. Lost For Words features a series of textured mixed media works on surfaces that range from canvas pieces with slightly crooked frames (which […]

Streets: Vhils (Lisbon)

After putting a new piece up at the revolving mural project Le M.U.R in Paris (covered), Vhils headed home to work on another wall in Lisbon. In contrast to the one in France where he used techniques similar to what you see from the artist for some pieces in gallery shows, this new piece in Portugal sees his classic chisel and hammer technique. Coincidentally, it sounds like he is currently working on upcoming shows in Paris and Lisbon that looks like it might be going in […]

Throughout the weekend, various programming (lectures, music performances, panel discussions) took place in the courtyard as well as in the bar of the hotel. The fair […]

Dan Walsh @ Paula Cooper

Recently, the Paula Cooper Gallery exhibited a new series of minimalist-conceptual paintings and works on paper by Dan Walsh. In some ways similar to the late Sol Lewitt (whose work is also represented by Paula Cooper), Walsh uses a process-oriented approach to art, by first formulating a system of rules or structures, which then dictates the production of each piece. The paintings in this show were dominated by grids and patterns of varying colors and complexity, often reminiscent of textiles, while the works on paper […]
