Openings: JR @ Watarium Museum (Tokyo)

We recently gave you a sneak peek at French “photograffeur” JR as he worked feverishly to set up his first solo museum exhibition at Tokyo’s Watari Musuem of Contemporary Art. This past weekend, the show opened to a enthusiastic reception by the people in Japan. Highlighting his Inside Out project, which incorporated the residents from North East Japan (where the tsunami hit in March 2011), JR went big as he always does and wheat-pasted the exterior facade of the museum. On the inside, we saw a diverse […]

Openings: Jean-Michel Basquiat @ Gagosian (New York)

Jean Michel-Basquiat was born in December of 1960 to a modest household in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of 5, he was (like most kids) heavily inspired by cartoons and began to sketch out his own. In his adolescent years, although very gifted intellectually (fluent in 4 languages by the age of 11), he became socially awkward, withdrawn and subsequently rebellious. When he was 15, Basquiat dropped out of high school and began running the streets, often seeking the shelter of a New York […]

Openings: Rostarr – “Turbo Arena” @ Anonymous Gallery

Last week, New York artist Rostarr (featured) unveiled his latest body of work in Mexico City at Anonymous Gallery. This inspiring series of paintings entitled Turbo Arena draws from his hypnotic signature style that is a smooth mash-up of iconography, graphics & calligraphy. Ro took our breath away with a jaw dropping 80 foot installation that he hand painted all by his lonesome. This show is up through the end of March, so if you’re fortunate enough to be in Mexico City, do yourself a favor […]

Videos / Releases: JR – “Action in Kesennuma, Japan” Lithograph

Back in November, French photograffeur JR headed to Japan and toured the disaster area, furthering his Inside Out project in the area – dedicated to the victims of the tsunami.  If you remember, one of the most poignant images from that trip was the pasting of the eyes of a local fisherman on a boat that was stranded and abandoned as the water receded. This piece has now been recreated as a 12 color lithograph (released here) along with a video documenting the creation process at the […]

Streets: Herakut – The Giant Storybook Project (Part II)

Back in November, we shared with you a longstanding project that street muralists Herakut have been working on called The Giant Storybook Project. Continuing their plan for creating a children’s book from murals painted around the world, the duo have a now completed their ninth piece in the series in Melbourne (639 Brunswick St Fitzroy North VIC 3068, Australia). While in town, they recently opened a show entitled Too High To Heal at the Metro Gallery so fans of their work can get a double dose […]

Releases: Olly Moss x 85th Annual Oscars Poster

Popular graphic designer and illustrator Olly Moss was recently commissioned (with the help of Gallery 1988) for arguably one of his most high profile projects to date – the official 85th Annual Oscars Poster. The image is a clever look at all the past winners of the Best Picture award with the iconic statuette re-imagined to that particular film for that year. You can take a look at the full poster in all its glorious detail here, see each individual prize here, and purchase a […]

Streets: Invader (Paris)

After filling the Jonathan LeVine booth (covered) with his tiled works during Basel Week Miami, Invader has returned to the streets in his home city of Paris recently with this new piece. Again taking elements of pop culture that interest him, the French street artist has created a mosaic featuring the Pink Panther. Photo credit: Un Oeil Qui Traine. Discuss Invader here.
