Tracey Emin Lights Up Times Square

Every night this month, at 11:57 pm, Time Square in New York will be lit up with work from Tracey Emin. The English artist’s iconic “neon” messages will spell themselves out over three minutes, digitally animated (which can be purchased as s[edition]) on 40 screens of different sizes placed all around the famous intersection in Midtown Manhattan. Openings: David Choong Lee – “Organic Updates” @ 111 Minna

Last week, AM decided stroll by 111 Minna Gallery to check out David Choong Lee’s latest effort, Organic Updates (previewed), which features a series of large clusters consisting of wood panels of painting, graffiti and collage, that are arranged to give the work a massive organic feel. Preview: Marco Mazzoni – “Il Ricordo è Un Consolatore Molesto”@ Galleria Patricia Armocida

Italian artist Marco Mazzoni is currently preparing a solo show with Galleria Patricia Armocida in Milan, Italy, opening on the 19th of February 2013. With fifteen new medium-scale colored pencil paper drawings, twelve Moleskin paper drawings, and a site-specific installation, his 1st solo show in the city he lives and works in, will be one of his biggest to date. Openings: Jay Howell – “Enthusiastic Person” @ FFDG

Last week, Fecal Face Dot Gallery (FFDG) hosted the opening of Jay Howell’s solo show Enthusiastic Person(previewed). On Howell’s resume is the character designer of Bob’s Burgers and co-creator & art director of the upcoming show, Sanjay and Craig. Previews: Alexandros Vasmoulakis – “Figures” @ LeBasse Projects

In a couple hours, the LeBasse Projects in Culver City will open their doors for the opening of Alexandros Vasmoulakis’ solo show entitled Figures. On display will be the Greek artist’s form of loose portraiture, rendered in thick textural strokes and bright colors. Although the initial expressions seen are smiling, when looking at the paintings for a longer period of time, a viewer gets the sense that the subjects may be overdoing their looks of joy and may actually be laughing to hide their pain. Benefits: Tara McPherson x CCM – “Rebuilding From A Fire”

Last month, there was a monstrous four alarm fire that raged thru a handful of apartments in Williamsburg Brooklyn. As many as 200 firefighters were dispatched to get the flames under control, with very little success. While many were displaced, a few of the residents of this devastating tragedy were artist Tara McPherson, Sean Leonard and their lovely newborn child Ronin. Preview: Scott Listfield & Jeff Gillette @ Gallery 1988 (Venice)

Later tonight, the Venice location for Gallery 1988 will be unveiling a two-person show from Scott Listfield and Jeff Gillette. The exhibition pairs Listfield’s astronaut pop culture-infused portraiture with Gillette’s postapocalyptic visions of the urban settings leading to an interesting look into the future perhaps from both artists.
