POW! WOW! ’14 / Streets: 123Klan

Graffiti couple 123Klan recently finished their mural for this years edition of the POW! WOW! Hawaii festival. This was not their only way of participating in the event, as Montreal-based artists, Klor & Scien, also took part in Seventh Letter x RVCA group show (covered), released limited edition prints with 1xRun (previewed), and designed some of the official merchandise of the event. Known for their super sharp, very tech looking style, and use of their graphic design elements in their graffiti work, the duo created this […]

POW! WOW! ’14 / Streets: Roid x Insa (Part I)

British artists Roid and Insa are part of “team England” at this year’s Pow! Wow! Hawaii,  working on an impressive and unusual collaboration. The two are creating another piece in Insa’s ongoing series of moving GIF-ITI’s, which features the interesting concept of creating street art that comes to life when put online in the form of animated gif. Taking full advantage of the strong connection between street art and internet, gif-iti’s are literally giving a new dimension to flat and static graffiti works. AM spent […]

POW! WOW! ’14 / Streets: Know Hope

American-born and Tel Aviv-based artist, Know Hope, is one of the artists taking part in this year’s Pow! Wow! Hawaii event in Honolulu. Although he originally planned on working on several smaller, hidden pieces in the alleys of the Kaka’ako area, the artist just finished this large mural on a side wall of a local carshop. With his minimalist style, very basic color palette, and recognizable imagery, he created this lovely piece of public art. Known for his emotive work and combining lyrics along with […]

Upcoming: Chloe Early – “Suspended” @ The Outsiders (London)

Coming up in early April, The Outsiders London will be presenting their first solo exhibition with painter Chloe Early (interviewed). Entitled Suspended, the show will feature the Irish-born, London-based artist’s mid air floating figures, inspired partly by Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s infamous mid-1700s sculpture, The Ecstasy of Saint Theresa, which combined both spiritual and sexual euphoria. Futura x Sprite for NBA All Star Weekend

New York graffiti legend Futura recently teamed up with Sprite to create three custom basketballs for the upcoming NBA All-Star Weekend. Two of them feature his iconic atomic imagery and pointman characters, and the last is inspired by LeBron James. Each one will be auctioned off after the All-Star weekend, with all proceeds going to the Boys & Girls Club of America. To learn more about the background of the project, take a look at the video below… Discuss Futura here.

POW! WOW! ’14: Murals – First Look

A major component of the POW WOW festival in Hawaii is of course the public art that goes up over a week, mostly in the industrial district of Kaka’ako. AM spent some of the last two days walking the streets chatting to artists and admiring the murals going up that not only display the skills of these painters from all over the world, but often times tests their collaborative problem-solving that occurs when working on joint walls (like the one above between Buff Monster and Nychos). Take […]

POW! WOW! ’14 / Openings: RVCA x TWSL – “#RVCATWFSL”

Last night in conjunction with POWWOW ’14, RVCA & The Seventh Letter teamed up to put on an exhibition featuring some of the graffiti & street artists they are affiliated with. Working with similar sized canvases, they each translated their imagery and aesthetic on the streets onto panel for the popup show (691 Auahi Street). Take a look at what the impressive roster of artists came up with in the photos below as well as what Barry McGee (aka Ly Quan) hid on the back of a non-descript gray and black speckled […]

Showing: “Calder and Abstraction: From Avant-Garde to Iconic” @ LACMA

Currently showing at the Resnick Pavilion of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art through July 27rd is an exhibition featuring Alexander Calder’s kinetic sculptures. Calder and Abstraction: From Avant-Garde to Iconic is billed as his first museum show in Los Angeles and includes of course his signature “mobiles” and later “stabiles” that have made his work famous around the world. The installation of the exhibition was designed by architect Frank Gehry, and frames Calder’s work perfectly for the viewer. Check out more photos below, but make sure to […]

Upcoming: Richard Colman – “Noise” @ V1 Gallery

On February 21st, the V1 Gallery in Copenhagen will be hosting the opening of Richard Colman’s new solo show. Entitled Noise, this exhibition will mark the return of the San Francisco-based artist to the space after a joint showing (covered) there with Andrew Schoultz in 2012. From this photo of the new paintings before they shipped out, we can expect more of his colorful yet dark renderings of his characters cavorting and stacking themselves in in contortions of bodies like a sick game of twister. Photo […]
