Currently at the Upper East Side location (20 East 79th Street) of Skarstedt Gallery in New York, a new body of work from Lucien Smith is on display through June 27th. Collectively entitled Tigris, the 11 large-scale paintings are part of a new series of paintings inspired by on of the first work of art that he can recall, Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa, an image of which hung in the wall of his classroom. The title reflects both the ancient body of water, and the wavelike forms on canvas as well as the camouflage patterns of the South Vietnamese soldiers during the 60s that Smith sourced, scanned and created stencils from the US military.
