Streets: Os Gemeos (Vancouver) – Part I

Os Gemeos are currently in Vancouver working on an impressive outdoor project organized by the Vancouver Biennale. Painting six large silos, on the full 360 degree surface covering 23,500 square feet (7,162 square metres), this is going to be their biggest mural to date, and their first one in Canada. With this project, the twins are joining the impressive roster of international artists including Ai Weiwei, Andy Goldsworthy, Vik Muniz and Jonathan Borofsky in transforming Vancouver into an open air museum for the 2014-2016 Vancouver Biennale. Openings: Casey Weldon & Femke Hiemstra – “Novel Relic” & “Warten am Walderand” @ Roq La Rue

Casey Weldon’s Novel Relic opened earlier this month, his first solo show at Roq La Rue. AM caught up with Weldon a few days prior to the open for a studio visit as he finished up a couple paintings. Openings: Matzu / Tomokazu Matsuyama – “Sky Is The Limit” @ Harbour City (Hong Kong)

Over the weekend, Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) opened his new showcase (arranged by LeBasse Projects) at Harbour City in Hong Kong. Like other artists before him – KAWS (here), Yayoi Kusama, Yue Minjun (here), and Florentijn Hofman (here) – the New York based artist’s work dominated the main entrance and was also supported by a small exhibition of his work. Included are a 6.5 meter high stainless steel sculpture as well his contemporary Japanese imagery gracing the stairs, pillars, and adjacent billboards. On August 22nd, the Alden Gallery in Provincetown will be presenting some new works from Kevin Cyr (interviewed). The fresh oil on panel paintings will expand on his series of portraits of old trucks, cars, campers, and vans – the more covered with graffiti and neglected the better. The upstate New York-based artist likes nothing better than to travel the urban centers of the world photographing these modes of transport infused with personality and then home to immortalize them as art. Streets: Phlegm for Djerbahood (Tunisia)

Continuing our tour of the amazingly extensive street art festival (coverage here) put on by Galerie Itinerrance in Tunisia, we now turn our attention to Phlegm. Creating a series of small murals on abandoned structures, the UK-based artist played around with the architectural elements and painted appropriately placed windows and doors for his signature characters to interact with. The end result are some of our favorite pieces yet for the Djerbahood Project. Discuss Phlegm here.

After releasing his first sculptural edition last year, Josh Keyes (interviewed) is already working on another two to the delight of his collectors. Based off two of his complimentary paintings The Hermit & Migratory Soul, the two figures are already are in their protoype form. Streets: Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans – Mexico Expedition

A couple of weeks ago Pangeaseed.org wrapped up another praiseworthy project on the island of Isla Mujeres, Mexico – Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans – Mexico Expedition. For this event that took place from July 20-28, they invited a group of international artists to help raise awareness for the conservation of the ocean. Similar to what they did with POW! WOW! Hawaii earlier this year (covered), 1xRun.com released a series of limited edition prints along with this event, with 100% of the proceeds going towards funding the programme. With a glimpse of the setup to whet your appetite yesterday, here is now the main course – completed photos from Project M/5 from Urban Nation. The lineup, curated by Roland Henry and VNA Magazine, featured Mark Lyken, Inkie, Pam Glew, Fran Bosoletti, Will Barras, Eine, Steff Plaetz, Nick Walker, O. Our regular readers will know what we have been enamored with the work of Tauba Auerbach for quite some time now. One of New York-based artist’s projects that we have been following (NY Book Fair, release, launch party) is her amazing [2,3] Pop-up Book. The slip-cased collection of six portfolios, feature intricately folded paper forms that seamlessly transform into three-dimensional geometric scuptures when open.
