On July 11th, New Image Art hosted the opening of a large SWIM 1 group show. After setting up Thierry Noir’s London retrospective (covered) and a Los Angeles show (covered), Howard Griffin Gallery invited the legendary Berlin wall artist to put together another solo show that celebrates his second biggest love – music. Headlining our Rewind feature this time is a short film documenting Adam Neate’s (interviewed) time in Beijing where he joined street calligraphers in Beihai Park. They all practice the art of DiShu, or water calligraphy where the ephemeral forms disappear as it evaporates. Streets: Aryz (Spain)

Given free reign at the Cultural Forum in Carballo in the community of Galicia in northwest Spain, Aryz painted his imagery on three large adjacent walls despite only having 10 days to complete the task. Two of the murals featured his more figurative work while the other was covered with looks to be a disassembled car. Take a look at more photos below… Discuss Aryz here.

Coming up in December of this year, an interesting pairing of Andy Warhol and Ai Weiwei will open at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne before traveling to Pittsburgh’s Andy Warhol Museum in June of 2016. Surveying the careers of two of the most significant artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the exhibition will feature over 300 works, including immersive installations and a wide representation of painting, sculpture, film, photography, publishing and social media. This Saturday, July 18th, at Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles, Edwin Ushiro (interviewed) will be unveiling new works for his latest solo entitled The Study of Life as Things. Most of the drawings are 8.5″ x 11″ and done with graphite, ink and ballpoint pens, tools the locally-based artist used during his intermediate school days. Painter Josh Keyes (interviewed) recently clued us in to the work of his wife Lisa Ericson by posting some of her work on various social media. We were especially drawn to a series she calls Mouserflies, for obvious reasons as you can see from the surreal hybrids seen here. For those interested in more from the Portland-based artist, you can see work from her as well as Keyes in the Unfathomable group show currently on view at The Piranha Shop, curated by Antler Gallery. The Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga is hosting the first solo exhibition in a Spanish museum of Los Angeles-based artist Shepard Fairey (featured). Curated by Fernando Francés, the retrospective spans over 25 years, and features paintings, silkscreens, stencils, stickers, illustrations, collage, photographs, sculptures and works in wood and metal. With over 300 pieces, this is the largest body of work from Shep to ever be exhibited.
