Continuing his longstanding relationship with Giant Robot, Eishi Takaoka is currently showing a new body of work entitled Socks at their gallery location – GR2 in Los Angeles. The Japanese artist’s serene head sculptures usually include something sprouting or interacting with their faces, oftentimes carved from one piece of wood. These extrusions are outwardly manifestations of his bottled up emotions and hidden frustrations with lower middle class life in Japan. Discuss Eishi Takaoka here.

Art Focus: Pawel Kuczynski

For our latest Art Focus feature, we turn our attention to Polish artist Pawel Kuczynski. As you can see from some examples here, the award winning cartoonist’s work dealing with technology and its effect on modern society was what caught our eye, especially his latest piece referencing the Pokémon Go phenomenon. Following up on news of his recent album cover with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kevin Peterson will be opening an exhibition on August 20th at Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City. Entitled Sovereign, the solo from the Houston-based artist will be hosted in the main space. Sebas Velasco recently painted a new mural in the old town of Croatian harbor city of Rijeka. Blending his expressive painterly style with the aged building and its unusual architecture, he created a narrative dedicated to the workers of the city. Invited in by the local Museum of Contemporary Art, the Spanish artist contributed to their ongoing program of creating public works in order to revitalize quiet and forgotten parts of the city. Award winning printer Christian M. Walter recently released a new limited edition by Spanish artist Paco Pomet whose work often touching on environmental issues and human behavior. For this project, the Andalucian painter chose Habia Una Vez (Once Upon a Time), a painting that was included in last year’s Dismaland event by Banksy (covered) and kept by him for his personal collection. Argentinian artist Elian Chali recently released his book entitled Hábitat. The softcover publication was released in edition of 1000 and it includes 208 pages with photographs, three essays and a foreword written by Martha Cooper (interviewed). In a conceptual sense, the book is a look over a city from the point of view of a regular person. Streets: Invader (Toulouse)

Last week, Invader started his first wave of public art in the city of Toulouse with some of his iconic tile-based works. Choosing an appropriate color for his video game-based characters, the French artist glued up ten different pieces in the “Pink City,” known for the pinkish terracotta bricks used in its architecture. Toulouse is the 66th city to be “invaded” by the street artist – you can see more in the photos below… Discuss Invader here.
