Critically acclaimed art star, Ryan McGinness, opened up his first solo show in three years at Dietch Projects last weekend. The show was packed with people anxious see what his stunning new body of work looked like. Using images, icons, and contemporary signals/signs, Ryan’s complex works are created using an intricate silkscreening process. Ryan told us that he labors on pieces for months to get layers upon layers of complex images to align and to bring them to completion. We noted varying layers of intricate colors, texture, and images that bring life to his works on many levels. His mediums are not just wood and canvases, but also some beautiful sculptures made of plastic and mirrors that had been blessed with Ryan’s signature creation process.
The exhibition showcased not only Ryan’s usual signature creations; but also a “black-room” that was filled with black lights and works that were designed to interact perfectly with that environment. The works there were created with florescent inks to give the viewer a “rave” meets fine art feel. Ryan’s numerous icons/images always seem to fit together to draw the viewer into a intricate storyline as one continues to study the pieces. As one friend mentioned: “seeing his images link together make it feel like a choose your own adventure art.” Ryan was around all night openly mingling with fans and signing/drawing his latest book, more details here. This massive show at Deitch’s main gallery is something that should not be missed.
