Souther Salazar opened his show “Last Year’s Man” at Jonathan Levine Gallery last weekend with a huge body of quality works. We were completely overwhelmed by the various mediums/media that entranced our senses. Known for his melancholy characters that seem simple at first glance, further inspection reveals a veritable “world within a world” complexity. Souther seemed to have the audience in mind when creating his works, as there was literally something to appeal to almost every art enthusiast. There were large wood panels, a video installation, intricate drawings, watercolor collages and a gorgeous installation comprised of hand-painted “Light-Bulb Balloon” sculptures. If you’re in the NYC area, make some plans to check this show out because this wonderland is something that should not be missed.
