Recently in the Viacom building (1515 Broadway) at New York’s Times Square, Dabs Myla created a new installation open to the public featuring sculpture, painting, wallpaper, and hand crafted objects and furniture from Modernica. As the fourth installment of the Art At Viacom program, New Cosmic is an immersive takeover by the husband and wife duo influenced by the design aesthetic of the 1950s as well as a recent trip to JantarMantar, an ancient temple dedicated to the study of Astrology in India. The multi-part creation, which the pair consider one of their favorite projects to date, includes interactive elements like wheels that can be spun to match your zodiac sign with one of four symbols along with a fortune as well as a tent where you can listen to the tunes of Velvet Underground and Pink Floyd. Also outside, passerbys can enjoy an animated video that loops on the large screen featuring the two’s imagery.
They further state – “We decided to recreate an environment that was inspired by these two places so we could invite people to share in the energy and moment with us. We teamed up with the furniture company Modernica to create sculptures and custom furniture pieces for New Cosmic. We love mid-century modern design and so many elements from this influences our artwork. To be able to collaborate with people who share a love for that era and design makes it a perfect match.”
