Last week, Takashi Murakami In Wonderland opened at Perrotin Gallery’s Shanghai location, the Japanese artist’s first solo in China. For his largest gallery show to date in Asia, the Superflat movement founder has chosen to focus on the evolution of his signature “Mr. DOB” character who he states is used as a self-portrait after 20 years of history together. Ranging from single-panel canvases to a large 15-meter-long acrylic painting mounted on an aluminum frame, as well as a monumental 250 cm sculpture, the body of work also touches on Murakami’s instantly recognizable flower motif and post-apocalyptic themes. Included in the show will be a special merchandise room full of exclusive items, plush flowers and other accessories.
